5 Ways to Keep Your Pet Safe During Halloween

It's almost time to take your furry fiend out and scare the kids into giving you candy! If your one of the many people who takes their pet trick-or-treating, it can be a blast for the whole family. At the PetCot Company, we care about your pet from the type of premium pet bed they sleep on, to their extracurricular activities! Here are a few things to keep in mind so that your pet is kept safe through the holiday festivities.

Candy Is Not for Pets

It goes without saying that candy and pets don't mix, and really should ever mix. All forms of chocolate are poisonous to dogs and cats alike, possibly causing diarrhea, vomiting, increased heart rate or even seizures. Keep all of the candy up out of reach from the pets from the beginning of the holiday to the end.

Keep Pets Away From the Door

The whole evening you will have strangers coming up to your door, which is terrifying enough for many pets, but then to have them dressed in costume too - it may just be too much for them. If possible, keep your pets away from the door. If you have an entry way that can be gated off, you can keep them away you can keep them in a closed off room with you when you're not answering the door.

Only Dress Them Up If They Like It

Some pets don't like to be dressed up, in costume so it is always best to remain flexible in case they really can't stand it. If you are determined to get them dressed up, make sure you start several days in advance to get them used to the feeling of the costume.

Keep Your Pets Indoors

If you have a black cat, this is especially true. Pranksters have been known to snatch up unsuspecting pets, especially the outdoor ones, for their own version of "trick-or-treat." Don't let your pet become a victim to them, and keep your pets put up for a few days around the holiday to make sure nothing happens.

Snap a Recent Shot

Finally, take a recent photograph of your pet, and make sure that their name tag has been updated. Just in case something should happen and they escape, it will be helpful to have this information on hand.

PetCot Cares About Pet Safety

Any holiday can be a bit surprising to your pet because the routines change and sometimes involve things they aren't as comfortable with. Take some time to love on your pet during a holiday weekend, and don't forget to create a safe place for them to retreat to when they need a break. You can put their favorite raised pet bed within easy access, as well as any blankets or toys that they love. If you haven't purchased a PetCot, don't delay! Our beds are premium dog beds, and loved by the pets and their owners alike. Happy Halloween from the PetCot Company!

Caring For Your Feline on Cat Day

Here at the PetCot Company, we love all furry friends - from fun-loving pups to friendly felines and they ALL love PetCots. While we primarily spend our time talking about dogs, today we wanted to talk about your favorite feline, and ways to care for them. It is Cat Day after all, so there's no better way to celebrate than by learning the best ways to care for your cat whether they are a new addition, or you've had them for years.

Choose the Right Identification

When you bring your new feline home, there are a few things you'll want to do right away. The fist is to get them a breakaway collar with an easy to read ID that includes your names, address and telephone number. Should anything happen to your kitty, you'll want someone to easily be able to get in touch with you.

Find a Good Veterinarian

Your little feline will need plenty of regular check-ups and vaccinations so you'll want to find a good vet from the start. Medical care is as essential for your cat as it is for you. If you already have dogs or cats at home, you'll want to make sure they are up to date on all of their shots as well before bringing home a new cat.

Find the Right Bug Prevention

Fleas and ticks are quite common in all pets, big or small, especially if they spend any time outside. Once one gets them, the rest of your pets will as well, so you'll want to make sure that you have the appropriate medication for them.

Groom Your Cat

All cats will need a form of grooming, whether they have long or short hair. You can get special cat brushes to keep their hair in good condition. It's also good for their skin condition, to prevent matting, and reduce shedding and hairballs. You should also keep their claws trimmed to keep them from growing into their paws.

Playing & Purring

Your cat may entertain itself, but many felines still love to have occasional bonding through physical and mental stimulation. There are special toys you can get, as well as scratching posts to distract them from your household furniture. You don't even have to find special toys, sometimes even a ping pong ball and paper bags can provide hours of entertainment.

Provide Basic Training

Basic training will ensure that everyone gets along peacefully. While many cats do have their own opinion about the way things should be done, you do want to set a few boundaries. Use a positive approach to teach your cat not to scratch the couch - or people, eat plants, or jump up on the counter tops. You will also want to reinforce housetraining with their litter box if they didn't already know this when you got them.

Don't Forget a Luxury Cat Bed

Did you know that cats love our PetCot beds just as much as pups? The vinyl design makes it more challenging to scratch and tear than other cat beds, and even if they do manage to scratch it to pieces, there are easy replacement parts for your PetCot! Visit our website to learn more about our premium pet beds, and don't forget to give your cute kitty a big hug for Cat Day!

Caring for Your Poochy Pet- What You Need to Know About Pet Obesity

While we say that there's just "more of them to love," and it's probably true, pet obesity in the United States is a pretty big issue. It's estimated that 58% of cats and 54% of dogs in the United States are overweight or obese, and if we don't start making some changes, the statistics are only going to grow. At the PetCot Company, while we primarily care about your pet's ability to rest and relax on a comfortable elevated dog bed, we also care for every other area of their lives as well. That's why we're going to focus on ways to start caring for your overweight pet one pound at a time.

What to Know About Pet Obesity

There are about 80 million pets nationwide that are considered overweight or obese by their veterinarians, but the problem is that the owners consider their weight to be normal. Normally, you would think that obesity would have to do with the weight of your pet, but in really has to do with how much extra fat your pet is storing. Because of that, you really have to evaluate your pet to determine if they are really obese or not.

What Causes Obesity in Pets?

Usually, obesity in pets is caused by excessive food intake and insufficient exercise - much like human obesity. Sometimes it will be more common in older pets because they tend to be less active. You can help fix this, by altering the amount they eat. Don't starve them by any means, but don't provide a bottomless bowl. You base the amount that they eat based on the amount that the weigh, but if they are overweight, you'll have to adjust that. Talk with your pet's care provider to determine a healthy way to manage their weight. You may have to use a special food that is used for weight control, or you may just have to limit the amount you provide for them.

Health Problems Caused By Obesity

You aren't doing your pet any favors by refusing to acknowledge their  weight problem. There are many health issues that can be caused by excess weight, and that will affect not only their quality of life but their life span. Here are just a few of the conditions that can occur from excess weight:
  • Exercise intolerance decreased stamina
  • Respiratory compromise (breathing difficulty)
  • Heat intolerance
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Diabetes or insulin resistance
  • Liver disease or dysfunction
  • Osteoarthritis (lameness)
  • Increased surgical/anesthetic risk
  • Lowered immune system function
  • Increased risk of developing malignant tumors (cancer)

Caring For Your Pet in Every Way

Take the time to understand what causes obesity in pets but also realize that it's important to recognize it before it happens. You aren't doing your pet any favors by ignoring it. At PetCot, we provide a premium elevated dog bed that supports your pet's joints, whether they are struggling with obesity, or they are an extremely active dog who just need a good place to relax. Are you looking for a raised dog bed that supports your pet in every stage of life? Visit our website and choose the pet bed that you won't have to replace month after month - because it lasts.

3 Reasons Why YOU Will Love A PetCot

Buying the right pet bed is an important decision that pet owners need to make. You want something that will last and not need to be replaced often, but also something that your pets will love. Cloth pet beds are a common sighting in pet stores, but they oftentimes cannot withstand the test of time. Not only will your furry friend love our PetCot beds, but you will too! Here are three reasons why you will love our raised pet beds:

1. They Are Durable

Cotton/Cloth pet beds seem like a great purchase at first, but how often do you find yourself rebuying beds because they either smell or somehow get destroyed? If you have a puppy, our durable pet beds are for you! Puppies chew on everything they can fit in their mouths and sometimes that means the corner of their bed. Our beds aren’t just for puppies, though. They are so durable that kennels across the nation use them. The frame is made of strong rust resistant steel tubing, not PVC plastic, which can crack and break. If your dog does manage to dig or chew their way through, we offer affordable, easy to install replacement parts. That’s right, just replace the part – not the whole bed!

2. Easy to Clean

Our beds are easy to clean. Just wipe it down with a cloth or hose with soap and water or safe disinfectant. No more washer or dryers to clean dog beds! The woven, vinyl-coated polyester fabric is breathable, will not puddle water and dries quickly and odor-free. Potty training a puppy can sometimes take a toll on their pet beds. With our easy to clean pet bed, just spray it down and wipe it clean. If you keep it outside, you won’t have to worry about rain or muddy paws ruining their favorite bed.

3. They Will Love it!

Our pet beds aren’t just loved by people; they are dog approved too! (Just read our blog on why your dog wants a PetCot.) Our elevated pet bed keeps pooches away from excessive cold, heat, moisture and pests. They will appreciate being off the ground and kept cool on warm days. Older dogs will appreciate that it is only raised 4 ½ inches, which is enough elevation for a flexible bend, but low enough to make it easy for them to get on and off. Other cot-style beds on the market are set at a much higher elevation, making it harder for older dogs to get on and off. Your dog will love that they have a comfortable place to sleep no matter the temperature. We also have a comfortable padding you can purchase for your pet to make it even more relaxing for them.

Buy The Bed Your Pet Will Love!

Your dog will love our premium pet beds, and you will too! PetCot beds come in a variety of different sizes and colors to fit any size dog and décor. Used by pet owners, kennels, and veterinarians across the nation, this unique raised dog bed is loved by all! Are you ready to make one of the best investments in your dog’s life? Visit our website to learn more about the PetCot Company and make your purchase today!
