Is Your Dog a Nap Champion?

Ever notice how much your doggie seems to love to snuggle up and take a little snooze... seemingly every time you turn around? It may seem over the top and alarming, but most dogs actually require quite a bit of rest to maintain their energy and health. So why do our dogs need so much sleep? There's actually several very good reasons. Let's find out!

They Need to Regenerate Energy
If you really think about it, dog's sleep periods typically don't last for several hours at a time like ours do. For humans, We typically go all day without a snooze, then catch up by resting for about 6-9 hours during the night. Dogs, however, don't sleep like we do. Instead, they take brief "catnaps" throughout the day and rarely sleep very deeply. So are they really actually getting a rested sleep when they do lay their heads down for a nap?

Breed Makes a Difference
The amount of sleep dogs need also depends on what they are bred to do. For example, dogs who are bred for working tend to stay awake because of the desire to work and stay active that are engrained in their DNA. Dogs that have tasks to hold their attention will spend most of the day active, dedicated to completing those tasks. Dogs that aren't bred for a specific purpose and lead more sedentary lifestyles, however, will spend most of the day laying around catching some shut eye.

Factor in Dog's Age and Size
On average, dogs spend about 12-to-14 hours of the 24-hour cycle sleeping. Older dogs typically need more sleep because like human seniors and the elderly, day-to-day living presents more challenges and they tire more easily. Puppies spend their awake-time exploring, playing and growing, so they need as much as 18 to 20 hours of sleep each day to recharge their batteries. And of course, all dogs need sleep, but it tends to be the bigger breeds that are known for constant dozing probably due to their rapid growth and shorter life span.

Your Dog's Health
Sleeping is an essential part of dogs' everyday routines, so you shouldn't be concerned if your dog sleeps often. However, if you notice a sudden or dramatic change in your dog's sleeping habits or something seems a little off, it's a good idea to consult your veterinarian. Excessive sleep has been linked to conditions such as canine depression, diabetes, and hypothyroidism.

Life Changes Can Affect Your Dog
Just like humans, dogs can require some time to recoup after experiencing any sudden life changes. Because dogs adapt so well to their original environments, any shift in their usual experiences may affect them. So if your dog has experienced an alteration in their normal schedule or lifestyle, such as a move to a new home, losing a companion, or even an addition to the family, you may notice a change in their sleep habits. Understandably, dogs may need extra sleep to get their mood and energy level back to normal.

Regardless of how often or how little your fur baby sleeps, one thing is certain. Your precious pooch needs a comfy clean place to rest that adorable head when nap time comes calling. Be sure that your dog's comfort is top of mind with a PetCot! PetCot raised dog beds provide optimal comfort and support for dogs (and other pets) of all sizes. These premium raised pet beds protect dogs from the breeding ground of bacteria and odor found in traditional lumpy pillow dog beds, while keeping your dog cool and cozy.

Caring For Your Older Pet

Your old pal has grown with you, enjoyed many happy years, and is now entering a new phase of life - their senior age. While there isn't much that changes, there are a few ways you can help care for your pet to make sure they stay comfortable through aches and pains. At the PetCot Company, we know as well as anyone that you need the right tools to help care for your older dog. Here are a few tips to help make it easier, and how we can help!

Provide Nutrition

Good nutrition is key at any age, but it's especially important when your pet is older. Their nutrition is actually critical to maintaining their active and playful nature, which in turn helps keep them younger longer. Take with your vet to learn about the type of diet that your pet needs. They can make food recommendations, and suggest special formulas that are ideal for your senior dog.

Get Plenty of Exercise

Your pup may be getting slower, but it's still important to get them outside and stretching those muscles. You may not be able to go for really long hikes or strenuous running, but you can still get out. Keeping your pet lean in their old age is one of the most important ways to prevent health issues.

Maintain their Weight

Just as extra pounds can cause you to feel achy, tired, and uncomfortable, the same applies for your pet. Additional and unnecessary weight on older dogs means they are experiencing more stress on their body - from the joints to the internal organs. If you feel like your furry friend should lose a few pounds, it's important to talk with your veterinarian. They can help you come up with a plan to accomplish it successfully and safely.

Schedule Check-Ups

The American Animal Hospital Association suggests that senior dogs see their vets at least every six months for a routine check-up. This can help catch diseases and health issues early on and make treatment easier. You should also speak with your vet about specific issues to your dog's breed. From kidney problems to diabetes, or even severe arthritis could be helpful to know about in advance and help you prepare if it's a possibility.

Get a PetCot

Finally, it's important to give your pet the support they need to keep their joints cushioned, and their rest easy. At the PetCot Company, we have designed our raised pet beds to be ideal for younger and older pets alike. We also have special accessories to make it easier on your older pet. Our premium raised pet beds can help prevent join-related difficulties because of the support they provide. They evenly support your bed, unlike filled beds that can clump and become uneven. If you are looking for a pet bed for an older dog - a PetCot is the way to go.

If your pet still needs some extra support, we supply an orthopedic dog bed insert as well as a fleece cover for optimum comfort. Visit our website to learn more about these amazing accessories.

The PetCot Bed

We want to help you and your pet enjoy every day that you have with them - instead of interrupting the time with illness, aches, and pains. By doing a few things now, you can help make the transition into old age easier for both you and your pet. Visit our website to learn more about the PetCot product, and order yours today!

3 Pup-Approved Reasons to Switch Your Pet's Bedding

Our pets are our best friends. So why do we let them sleep on the floor or on an uncomfortable and filthy cushioned bed when we know they deserve the best? Perhaps it's because you don't know of any other solutions that would be more pet-friendly. Perhaps it's because you don't know the benefits of getting your pets off the floor and into a premier raised pet bed. Well, we're here to change that. Check out our 3 puptastic reasons why you should stop wasting your time, money, and energy with pillow beds for your pets.

Skip the Stuffing

We've all been there and done that when it comes to your fur baby discovering the insides of a favorite stuffed toy or unsuspecting pillow. It's not a pleasant sight, and it certainly isn't enjoyable to clean up after. Why would you keep throwing money away on those expensive stuffed beds just to have it destroyed in the first week of purchase? You won't have to worry about picking up stuffing with a premium raised dog bed from the PetCot Co. These beds are made for durability with a patented design and steel construction. No plastic pieces that can crack and break.

Super Easy to Clean

If you've ever had a pet who slept on a cushion bed, you know what we mean when we say there is no smell like it - and we don't mean that in a good way! Cushioned beds are often hard to clean and almost impossible to prevent unpleasant odors and bacteria from clinging. PetCot raised dog beds are comfortable, hygienic, and super easy to clean with water, soap and a cloth or hose - meaning less laundry and lingering odors for you!

Promote a Healthy Future

You don't enjoy sleeping on the floor or a lumpy mattress. After sleeping on a hard floor or a lumpy pillow bed, dogs feel the same pains that we do - achy and stiff. Preventative solutions are the best way to keep your dog feeling like a pup for many years to come. That's why getting a raised bed for your fur baby is a must even if your pet doesn't have arthritis, hip dysplasia, or other joint problems. The elevated dog bed also allows for all around breathability which means your pet won't get too hot or cold no matter what time of year it is.

Stop spending money replacing those pesky pillow beds every few months, and get your pets the bed that they deserve! Treat them like the royalty you know they are and invest in a premier raised pet bed for your favorite cuddle buddy today. We've got a variety of sizes and colors (and accessories) to fit your pet's needs, your home's decor, and your budget. Trust us, you and your fur baby will have a howling good time after you've both had a comfortable night's rest!

To Eat or Not To Eat - THAT is the Question!

As a dog parent, there are plenty of things to worry about and research - but food doesn't have to be one of them! Whether it's fruits, veggies, meat, or snacks, some foods aren't good for your pet, while others are A-okay. Here at The PetCot Company, we know how easy it is to slip your pet some of your food, so we want to make sure you know which ones are safe.

Safe to Eat

Foods that are filled with protein, vitamins, and minerals are all great options for your pet. These foods are not only healthy but also safe because they are soft and easy to eat without being a choking hazard.
  • Rice
  • Lettuce
  • Cantaloupe
  • Meat
  • Peanut Butter
  • Bananas
  • Pumpkin
  • Carrots
  • Fish
  • Pears
  • Spinach

Safe in Moderation

These foods are okay occasionally, but you need to keep it limited. The high acid content of pineapple and tomatoes makes them hard to eat, while watermelon seeds can be hard on their digestive system.

  • Pineapple
  • Hot Dogs
  • Broccoli
  • Tomatoes
  • Blueberries
  • Potatoes
  • Strawberries
  • Watermelon
  • Apples
  • Mushrooms
  • Cheese
  • Bread

Be Careful

If you can avoid the items on this list, your pet won't be any worse off for it. Popcorn kernels can be hard on your pup's stomach, while cherries often have pits that aren't good for them either. Almonds are hard for them to eat and can risk being a choking hazard.

  • Popcorn
  • Cherries
  • Shrimp
  • Peppers
  • Almonds
  • Corn
  • Celery
  • Marshmallows

Not Safe

Finally, it goes without saying that these items don't pass the food test. Beer isn't just bad, it's dangerous. The fermentation and yeast can cause severe issues for your dog. Onions and garlic are not safe for their stomachs and in mild cases can cause vomiting and stomach issues.

  • Walnuts
  • Beer
  • Pomegranate
  • Onions
  • Avocado
  • Chocolate
  • Grapes
  • Nuts
  • Gum
  • Garlic

What Do You Do When Your Pet Eats Something They Shouldn't?

Have you ever dropped something on the floor only to realize that your dog snatched it up before you could stop them? You can't protect your pet from everything, but you can make sure you know what to do in those situations.

Signs That You're Pet Ate Something Foreign

  • Vomiting
  • Painful abdomen
  • Lack of appetite
  • Lethargy
  • Changes in typical behavior
  • Changes in bowels - diarrhea, constipation

If you think that your pet has eaten something that's not good for them - either food or foreign object it's important to take them to their vet immediately. Depending on what they may have eaten your vet may suggest an X-ray, or maybe they just need something to help induce vomiting.

Caring For Your Pet

We know that you want the best for your pet, and that goes for the food they eat to the bed they sleep on. Here at PetCot, we can help you provide a raised pet bed that isn't just comfortable, but good for your pet! The raised design makes it easy for them to get on and off, but also keeps them from putting too much strain on their joints. Caring for Your Poochy Pet- What You Need to Know About Pet Obesity

While we say that there's just "more of them to love," and it's probably true, pet obesity in the United States is a pretty big issue. It's estimated that 58% of cats and 54% of dogs in the United States are overweight or obese, and if we don't start making some changes, the statistics are only going to grow. At the PetCot Company, while we primarily care about your pet's ability to rest and relax on a comfortable elevated dog bed, we also care for every other area of their lives as well. That's why we're going to focus on ways to start caring for your overweight pet one pound at a time.

What to Know About Pet Obesity

There are about 80 million pets nationwide that are considered overweight or obese by their veterinarians, but the problem is that the owners consider their weight to be normal. Normally, you would think that obesity would have to do with the weight of your pet, but in really has to do with how much extra fat your pet is storing. Because of that, you really have to evaluate your pet to determine if they are really obese or not.

What Causes Obesity in Pets?

Usually, obesity in pets is caused by excessive food intake and insufficient exercise - much like human obesity. Sometimes it will be more common in older pets because they tend to be less active. You can help fix this, by altering the amount they eat. Don't starve them by any means, but don't provide a bottomless bowl. You base the amount that they eat based on the amount that the weigh, but if they are overweight, you'll have to adjust that. Talk with your pet's care provider to determine a healthy way to manage their weight. You may have to use a special food that is used for weight control, or you may just have to limit the amount you provide for them.

Health Problems Caused By Obesity

You aren't doing your pet any favors by refusing to acknowledge their  weight problem. There are many health issues that can be caused by excess weight, and that will affect not only their quality of life but their life span. Here are just a few of the conditions that can occur from excess weight:
  • Exercise intolerance decreased stamina
  • Respiratory compromise (breathing difficulty)
  • Heat intolerance
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Diabetes or insulin resistance
  • Liver disease or dysfunction
  • Osteoarthritis (lameness)
  • Increased surgical/anesthetic risk
  • Lowered immune system function
  • Increased risk of developing malignant tumors (cancer)

Caring For Your Pet in Every Way

Take the time to understand what causes obesity in pets but also realize that it's important to recognize it before it happens. You aren't doing your pet any favors by ignoring it. At PetCot, we provide a premium elevated dog bed that supports your pet's joints, whether they are struggling with obesity, or they are an extremely active dog who just need a good place to relax. Are you looking for a raised dog bed that supports your pet in every stage of life? Visit our website and choose the pet bed that you won't have to replace month after month - because it lasts.

Hot Weather Tips for Your Furry Friend

If you stepped outside to walk your dog this morning and had to hang onto something to keep from passing out because of the extreme heat - you're not alone! This week is going to reach extraordinary levels in the Midwest, and while it may only be 94° degrees, it's going to feel like 108°. If you think that's bad enough, it's only supposed to get hotter throughout the week, topping off at 100° on Saturday. At PetCot, we know that you'll want to be escaping this heat as fast as you can, but so will your four-legged friends. Here are a few tips to help keep them cool and safe through this summer heat.

WATER - Always

We know this goes without saying, but keeping their water bowl filled with cool, clean water is a must when the weather is this warm. If your dog stays outside, please make sure that they have enough to get through the day while you're not there. Put it in a cool shaded place so that it doesn't get hot. Don't leave glass dishes unattended on a wood porch, by the way. The reflections from the glass have been known to start fires in some cases. If you'll be going out for exercise, either bring a bottle of water and a bowl in your vehicle for your dog, or plan stops along the way where you know there is natural water so they can stay hydrated.

Keep Their Temperature Down

Dogs pant to keep their temperatures down, and, unlike humans, cannot sweat the heat away. This means that it takes your dog significantly more time to cool off, and sometimes they just need some help. Keep your furry friend in a cool shady place, if not inside in the air conditioning. You can apply rubbing alcohol on the pads of their foot to help bring their temps down, and you can also put ice packs under their armpits. Ice is also another good way to cool their bodies down, giving them a few cubes to chew on can really help. Just beware that they don't choke on them.

Be Aware of Their Location

Always be aware of where your dog will be so that you can make sure they are safe. Never leave your dog in a car without proper airflow. Even in the shade, your car can still reach astronomical temperatures, and be much hotter than you would appreciate sitting in. If your dog primarily lives outside, you can make sure that they have adequate shade, lots of water, and if they have access to a pool to lie in, that can be helpful.

Protect Their Skin & Paws

You want to keep your dog groomed, but don't trim down too far! A good idea is to leave at least one inch of fur. Their fur provides protection from bugs, mosquitos, and the sun, plus if your dog is double-coated, the undercoat actually helps with air flow. Also, remember that if the pavement is too hot for you to walk on, it's too hot for them to walk on. Either save walking for later in the day when it's cooled down, or get them booties to help protect their paws.

PetCot Cares About Your Pet

We don't just care that your pet has a comfortable raised pet bed to sleep on, we care that they have a great place to relax all day long - especially while it's so hot outside. As the temperatures get warmer, remember that one of the biggest advantages of the PetCot dog bed is that it is raised off of the ground by four and a half inches, so there is always air flow moving around your pet. Our premium dog beds are also suitable for indoor and outdoor use, so when you need to take your pet outside, they can still be comfortable on the pet bed that they love! Visit our website to select the bed size for you and have it shipped to your front door!

Why The Doctor Prescribes a PetCot!

While you may think that the only reason you should have a PetCot is because it's a "pretty" pet bed, or it's a luxury pet bed for the spoiled pooch, there's more to it. While a PetCot bed is all of those things, it's also so much more! Our raised pet beds are not just pretty or luxurious, they are also a great advantage for your pets health, as well as your own peace of mind. Here are a few reasons why veterinarians actually use our beds, and why you should consider using them too!

Reasons to Buy a Petcot

The Elevated Design

The PetCot dog bed provides comfort and support for Pets while NOT providing a breeding ground for bacteria and odor found in pillow beds.

Wellness Care is EASY

The PetCot dog bed helps prevent joint-related difficulties and cuts down on elbow calluses. It is great for all dogs and cats and beneficial for arthritic and geriatric pets. The PetCot dog bed evenly supports your pet, unlike filled beds that can clump and become uneven.

They Are Easy To Clean

Veterinarian Testimonials

Now that you know the reasons that a PetCot is so loved by your pet, and recommended by your veterinarian, here are some testimonials to prove why they love them so much.
We want you to know how delighted we are with the PetCot products we have tried. We have found several places for the pads in recovering or incapacitated dog's cages and they seem to be pretty indestructible and easy to clean. The item we really like the best has been the PetCots themselves. We routinely have our Rehabilitation patients lie on them while we use our treatment devices or while we perform manual therapy on these patients. Many of the patients are wet, coming out of the pool or Underwater Treadmill and the PetCots are perfect for these animals getting ready for one therapy or another. Our rehab clinic uses them everyday and many animals walk right up to them and lie down getting ready for their treatment. They are so comfortable most animals "climb aboard" without being coaxed. Several of our clients want to use them at home for their animals to sleep up off the floor. We have really enjoyed using these products and wish you great success in the future.

Sincerely,
Steve Steinberg, VMD, DACVIM (neurology), Head of Neurology VCA/VRA, Instructor: Canine Rehabilitation Institute, President: Veterinary Specialty Services, LLC
Hi Kim,
The PetCot was quite busy during our two courses this month. We had a minimally ambulatory Boxer who loved the bed even when we were not 'in session'. The class observed how easy it was to examine a 'down dog' on the cot, saving the examiners' backs and keeping the dog comfortable at the same time. Everyone was impressed!

Dog vs. Tick - The Ultimate Showdown

If you and Fido have stepped outside this spring, you will have likely noticed that the ticks are already out and possibly even worse than ever. In fact, some even predict that Missouri is going to be one of the states that will most likely harbor high populations of these pests. Ticks can be a big problem for you and your pet because they harbor vicious diseases that can affect you both. Don't spend your whole summer locked away from those nasty pests, here are a few things you can do to help minimize the chances of them attaching to your pet!

Trim the Weeds

Ticks love living in tall grass and other weedy areas because they hang out at the top and as you brush past them, they hitch a ride. Cut down on their habitat, you can help eliminate them from your yard.

Scatter Food-Grade Diatomaceous Earth in Your Gardens

If you keep your grass short and still notice too many ticks, you can use food-grade diatomaceous earth in your gardens to keep those ticks out. It dehydrates insects and can be a very effective solution for keeping ticks and fleas out of your garden areas.

Invite the Wildlife

Did you know that ticks actually have many natural predators, and if you can get them into your yard, you will help eliminate their existence in your yard? If you incorporate more flowering shrubs and perennials to attract birds, small mammals and even a few bug-eating amphibians you can invite the predators into your yard and eventually eliminate the ticks.

Keep Your Pets Groomed

Especially if you have long haired pets, grooming can make a huge difference in how many ticks attach to them. If you do give them a summer shave, don't do it too short, because their hair keeps them from getting sun burnt. You can also use a lint roller on them after they've come in from the outdoors. The ticks will attach to the sticky sheet and you can throw it away. While grooming, don't forget to do a tick check, and it's always a good idea to do one when you bring them inside.

Natural Ingredients That Repel Fleas and Ticks on Dogs

If you don't want to use repellents from your vet, you can use several different natural ingredients to help repel them.

  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Brewer's Yeast and Garlic
  • Oranges, Lemons, and Grapefruit
  • Mint Infusions
  • Cloves and Camphor Spray
  • Rose Bar Soap
  • Dry Pennyroyal
  • Alcohol, Distilled Water & Essential Oils
  • Sulpher
  • Lemon, Salt, and Vinegar Spray
  • Apple Cider Vinegar, Salt, and Baking Soda Spray
  • Coconut Oil

Remember, that if you'll be testing a new product on your pet, you should start in small amounts to make sure that there are no adverse reactions to the new product on your pet's skin. You can also speak with your dog's veterinarian about different solutions and what ingredients you can use on your pet.

Easy to Clean Pet Bed

While a PetCot bed may not repel ticks, they are made in an easy to clean fashion so that you don't have to worry about these beds harboring the enemies! Fleas and ticks will never live in your PetCot bed because our woven vinyl bed doesn't have anywhere for them to go. You can easily wipe down your pet with a cloth and keep it clean and comfortable. If you're looking for a raised pet bed that will not only be comfortable but also easy to clean, visit our website today!

Bad Breath Remedies for Your Dog

Our furry friends are so cuddly, playful, and fun, but then you get a whiff of their breath, and something has to change! There are products out on the market that could work, but some of them can be rather pricey, and what if they don't work? There are a few natural remedies that you can try on your pet and see if they help with any of the bad breath issues.

Cause of Bad Breath

While we are all familiar with "halitosis," in dogs it can sometimes signify that some changes are needed in hygiene care or diet. Sometimes it can be a result  of a build-up of odor-producing bacteria in your dog's mouth, lungs or gut. If bad breath is persistent, you can talk to your vet and see if there are any other things you should look into.
