Tips For Preventing Flea & Tick Infestation

With the nicer weather brings great opportunity to get outdoors with your pets. This also brings a high chance of dealing with the frustrations of flea and ticks. Not only is it frustrating for you and uncomfortable for your pet, but these pesky little parasites can also causes illnesses and diseases. While it's practically impossible to avoid them altogether, the PetCot Company has a list of things that you can do to prevent and treat for fleas and ticks - take a look!

Bathe Regularly

Bathing your pet with a shampoo or flea/tick dip that contains medicated ingredients will typically kill ticks and fleas on contact. While this can labor intensive, it is an inexpensive method of protection and prevention. Since this doesn't necessarily do well to prevent ticks and fleas, you'll need to repeat the process frequently as the effective ingredients won't last as long as a topical or oral treatment.

Use a Topical Treatment

One of the benefits of going with topical treatments is that they come in many forms, such as powders, sprays, spot-on treatments, and collars. Using an over the counter spot-on medication that you purchase from your veterinarian, pet store, or online can be a very effective method for controlling both ticks and fleas. These medications are effective at keeping parasites at bay for up to a month. Collars that repel ticks and fleas are an additional preventive you can use, though they are mainly only useful for protecting the neck and head. Tick and flea powders work to kill and repel. Removing Pet Stains & Odors

For all of the things to love about our furry friends, like their kisses, the way the snuggle, and how they greet us at the door when we come home, there are a few things that aren't so lovable. Pet odors and stains are not a force to be reckoned with - especially when they start to affect the overall quality of your home. At the PetCot Company, we know how important it is for you to keep your home clean for both your family and your fur-family, so we have a few tips to help you!

Carpet Stains

Whether your sweet pup is still learning how to let you know when they need to go outside, or your older dog has the occasional accident - sometimes you just need to know how to get some stains out of the carpet. You can use a mixture of Borax to help remove the stain and the odor. Mix 1/2 C. Borax in 1 pint of hot water; if carpet, then use 1/4 c. Borax + 1/4 C. Salt (table) + 1/4 C. Vinegar. You can apply this mixture to the stain, and then blot it out or let sit for 30 minutes. Blot the rest out with water and then let it dry.

If you don't want to get the item wet, you can put the Borax on the stain and let it sit before vacuuming it up.

Hardwood Floor Stains

Hardwood floor stains can seem tricky to remove, but if you have the right tools it should come out - even after a little work. First, clean up the area if there is any pet urine left. Then put some paper towels down over the stain and spray hydrogen peroxide on the towels until they are wet. Let it sit for several hours. If you notice the towels drying, you can spray more peroxide on them. After the towels have covered the stain for a while, remove them and put baking soda or kitty litter on it. This will help remove the moisture and the odor.

Lawn Stains

Unfortunately, there aren't any great ways for removing the stains once they are on your lawn. The best plan is to wait and let the grass grow back on its own. There are some preventative things you can do, though. Try not to let your pet go to the bathroom in the same spot repeatedly. After they have urinated on a spot, you can neutralize it by spraying water on the area.

Can it Fit in the Washing Machine?

For all items that can be thrown in the washer, you can add a baking soda to your wash, along with your regular laundry soap and you should see it appears good as new. If you still see or smell the soiled area, you can use and enzymatic cleaner to help break down the pet waste odors and stains.

Homemade Dog Treats for Your Furry Friend

If your dog is like most, there's nothing they love more than a tasty treat! From the dog treats you buy at the store, to the spoonful of peanut butter you give in bribery, there are many of these things that can get your dogs tail wagging. While it's easy to buy treats, sometimes it's nice to "treat" your pup to something a little more special, and homemade! Here are a few recipes that look especially delicious, and we think fido will think so as well.

Peanut Butter Banana Dog Treats

Recipe from Munchkins and Military

• 1 1/2 cups uncooked Oatmeal
• 1 large Banana
• 1/2 cup Peanut Butter

1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
2. Using a food processor or blender, grind your oats until they're powder.
3. In a bowl, beat together the banana and peanut butter until smooth. A few small chunks of banana here and there is ok. The dough should stick together, but shouldn't be sticky.
4. Reserve about a tablespoon of ground oatmeal and pour the rest into the banana peanut butter mixture and mix until combined.
5. Dust your surface with the reserved ground oatmeal and roll your dough to about a 1/4 inch thickness.
6. Cut into desired shapes and place on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet.
7. Bake treats for approximately 15 minutes, or until the edges start to brown.
8. Cool completely before storing in an airtight container for up to a week.

Spinach, Carrot, & Zucchini Dog Treats

• 1 cup pumpkin puree
• 1/4 cup peanut butter
• 2 large eggs
• 1/2 cup old fashioned oats
• 3 cups whole wheat flour, or more, as needed
• 1 carrot, peeled and shredded
• 1 zucchini, shredded
• 1 cup baby spinach, chopped

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat; set aside.
2. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat pumpkin puree, peanut butter and eggs on medium-high until well combined, about 1-2 minutes.
3. Gradually add old-fashioned oats and 2 1/2 cups flour at low speed, beating just until incorporated. Add an additional 1/4 cup flour at a time just until the dough is no longer sticky. Add carrot, zucchini and spinach, beating just until incorporated.
4. Working on a lightly floured surface, knead the dough 3-4 times until it comes together. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Using cookie cutters, cut out desired shapes and place onto the prepared baking sheet.
5. Place into oven and bake until the edges are golden brown, about 20-25 minutes.*
6. Let cool completely.

Hypoallergenic Chicken Dog Biscuits

• 1 ¼ Cups Rice Flour
• 3 Tbsp. Vegetable or Canola Oil
• ½ teas. Salt
• 1/3 Cup Chicken Broth or Water

1. Preheat oven to 325˚.
2. Mix all ingredients in a bowl, should be the consistency of play dough, you may need to add an additional 1-2 tablespoons of liquid to get the right consistency.
3. Knead the dough until smooth, roll out on a lightly floured surface to ¼ inch. Cut out shapes with a cookie cutter or make rectangles with a knife or pizza wheel.
4. Place on a cookie sheet and bake at 325˚ for 15-20 minutes until just slightly browned on the bottoms.
5. Let cool and store in an airtight container.
