Is Your Dog a Nap Champion?

Ever notice how much your doggie seems to love to snuggle up and take a little snooze... seemingly every time you turn around? It may seem over the top and alarming, but most dogs actually require quite a bit of rest to maintain their energy and health. So why do our dogs need so much sleep? There's actually several very good reasons. Let's find out!

They Need to Regenerate Energy
If you really think about it, dog's sleep periods typically don't last for several hours at a time like ours do. For humans, We typically go all day without a snooze, then catch up by resting for about 6-9 hours during the night. Dogs, however, don't sleep like we do. Instead, they take brief "catnaps" throughout the day and rarely sleep very deeply. So are they really actually getting a rested sleep when they do lay their heads down for a nap?

Breed Makes a Difference
The amount of sleep dogs need also depends on what they are bred to do. For example, dogs who are bred for working tend to stay awake because of the desire to work and stay active that are engrained in their DNA. Dogs that have tasks to hold their attention will spend most of the day active, dedicated to completing those tasks. Dogs that aren't bred for a specific purpose and lead more sedentary lifestyles, however, will spend most of the day laying around catching some shut eye.

Factor in Dog's Age and Size
On average, dogs spend about 12-to-14 hours of the 24-hour cycle sleeping. Older dogs typically need more sleep because like human seniors and the elderly, day-to-day living presents more challenges and they tire more easily. Puppies spend their awake-time exploring, playing and growing, so they need as much as 18 to 20 hours of sleep each day to recharge their batteries. And of course, all dogs need sleep, but it tends to be the bigger breeds that are known for constant dozing probably due to their rapid growth and shorter life span.

Your Dog's Health
Sleeping is an essential part of dogs' everyday routines, so you shouldn't be concerned if your dog sleeps often. However, if you notice a sudden or dramatic change in your dog's sleeping habits or something seems a little off, it's a good idea to consult your veterinarian. Excessive sleep has been linked to conditions such as canine depression, diabetes, and hypothyroidism.

Life Changes Can Affect Your Dog
Just like humans, dogs can require some time to recoup after experiencing any sudden life changes. Because dogs adapt so well to their original environments, any shift in their usual experiences may affect them. So if your dog has experienced an alteration in their normal schedule or lifestyle, such as a move to a new home, losing a companion, or even an addition to the family, you may notice a change in their sleep habits. Understandably, dogs may need extra sleep to get their mood and energy level back to normal.

Regardless of how often or how little your fur baby sleeps, one thing is certain. Your precious pooch needs a comfy clean place to rest that adorable head when nap time comes calling. Be sure that your dog's comfort is top of mind with a PetCot! PetCot raised dog beds provide optimal comfort and support for dogs (and other pets) of all sizes. These premium raised pet beds protect dogs from the breeding ground of bacteria and odor found in traditional lumpy pillow dog beds, while keeping your dog cool and cozy.

Tips for Training and Keeping Your Active Chewer Busy

For many dogs, a few vigorous walks a day can help to keep them satisfied and prevent their destructive nature from peaking its ugly head out. But for some dogs, especially puppies, simply walking them just isn't enough to deter their instinctive nature to chew and destroy. We all know how frustrating it can be to try to stay patient after watching time and again your beloved new puppy destroy yet another pair of shoes. That's why this week, the PetCot Company is sharing with you a few tips for training and keeping your active chewer busy.

Kennel While You're Away
If you've got a stress-induced or bored chewer, perhaps it's in your (and their) best interest to keep them kenneled while you're away and unable to supervise. Start off by making sure they relate their kennel as a safe zone and not just a place for discipline. If you only use the kennel when they're being bad, they'll have negative feelings toward the kennel and you may have a very difficult time getting them to willingly go to their kennel, which could cause a whole new set of problems in itself. So use the kennel often, even while you're home, so they don't relate it as a bad experience and become comfortable spending time in it. By kenneling your dog while you're not there to supervise, you'll avoid destruction of your home and personal items, but you'll also avoid your dog chewing up something that could be harmful to their health.

Give Them Ways to Release Energy
Not only should you take your dog on walks to let out some of their pent up energy, but you should also provide them with ways to continue to release energy when they're in the house. Some great ways to do this are to create fun games that make them work for treats. As an example, you can hide treats around your home and send your beloved fur baby on a scavenger hunt to find them. You may have to lead them to the hiding spots the first few times you do this, but they'll catch on quickly and soon enough you'll be finding new hiding spots to challenge them! You can also give them durable toys to chew on that'll keep their interest for hours, such as Kongs filled with treats or peanut butter. Or go big and create a designated sand pit in the backyard that they can dig in. Whatever you choose to do, make sure that it'll keep your dog's interest, and routinely change it up to keep them from getting bored.

Teach Your Dog Right From Wrong
While it may not seem like it at first, dogs (even easily distracted puppies) love to please. So, how are you going to teach your dog right from wrong? Well, with consistency and patience, of course! But seriously. The trick is to SHOW your dog what is okay for them to chew on. How you can do this is anytime your dog is chewing on something they shouldn't be, take it away and firmly tell them "NO". Then immediately offer them something they CAN chew on. Once they take it, praise them! It's really that simple. By staying consistent and patient, your smart little pooch will quickly catch on that there are certain things they are okay chewing on, and will avoid the rest.

We hope that these tips will serve you well in the task of training and keeping your active chewer busy. Just remember, consistency and patience is the most important part of training any dog. And of course, for those destructive dukes in your life, make sure you've got a comfy place for them to rest their heads after you wear them out. Get a durable dog bed from PetCot. Our beds are one of the most durable on the market. If, however, your chewer does do damage to our premium raised beds, we offer affordable, easy to install replacement parts. Just replace the part - not the whole bed! Visit our website to order yours today!

PetCots are Perfect for Boarding Kennels

While we know our individual owners LOVE having a PetCot pet bed, we also know how much our kennel owner's appreciate them as well. Pet supplies in a kennel must be able to withstand constant use and many different dogs. From big to small, and energetic to lazy, every dog has a different set of needs, and a PetCot bed can help survive all of them. If you work for a kennel, here are a few reasons we think you'll love having our beds in stock!

They're Incredibly Durable

The PetCot dog bed is lightweight but tough enough that it is used in thousands of homes and kennel runs nationwide. Our exclusive cover is heat-sealed seamed, not sewn, with corner-to-corner fabric. The frame is made of strong rust resistant steel tubing (not PVC plastic, which can crack and break). One of the best (and most common) testimonials we receive is that our beds last for a LONG time. If under the rare circumstance that something happens, we offer replacement parts!

They are Very Comfortable and Hygienic

The PetCot dog bed provides comfort and support for pets while alleviating the breeding ground for bacteria and odor that pillow beds provide. Any kennel will be the first to realize that a large number of dogs from many different backgrounds can mean that there are many different germs and odors that come through. Having a hygienic pet bed can help alleviate these occurrences.

The Elevated Design

Our unique 4 ½" elevated dog bed evenly distributes dog's weight while keeping the dog away from excessive cold, heat, moisture and pests. Other cot-style beds on the market are higher elevation making it hard for older pets to get on and off. This can be a huge advantage for kennels, because of the varying ages of the dogs that will be there. If you have older dogs, the height is still easy enough for them to climb up to, and the weight dispersing is extremely comfortable to them.

They Assist with Wellness Care

We know more than anyone that you will have many different pets in your kennel on a day to day basis. From young and frisky to old and wise, you want a bed that can support all stages of life. The PetCot dog bed helps prevent joint-related difficulties and cuts down on elbow calluses. It is great for all dogs and cats and beneficial for arthritic and geriatric pets. The PetCot dog bed evenly supports your pet, unlike filled beds that can clump and become uneven.

Great for Indoors and Outdoors

The rugged construction is perfect for indoor and outdoor use, making our beds a perfect addition to your kennel. The fabric is UV light resistant and fast drying, so whether it gets left out on a rainy day or a sunny day, it will be able to stand up to the elements.

Best Pet Beds for Your Pet

We are proud to have constructed a pet bed that is perfect for kennels and individuals alike. Our beds were created with you and your pets in mind, which is part of what makes them ideal. If you're ready to start using the best pet beds for kennels, visit our website today!

5 Ways to Celebrate National Mutt Day

This coming Monday, July 31st is National Mutt Day, also known as National Mixed Breed Dog Day! This widely celebrated holiday was created in 2005 by Celebrity Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Welfare Advocate, Colleen Paige. National Mutt Day is all about embracing, saving and celebrating mixed breed dogs. So, in honor of this wonderful pet holiday, the PetCot Company is offering 5 ways in which you can celebrate the mutts in your life!

1. Visit your local animal shelter and adopt a new friend
Dog lovers know every canine is one-of-a-kind, but mixed-breed dogs are truly unique thanks to their grab-bag of genes. Mutts come in every shape, size, scruff, and shade you can think of! Personality-wise, too, mixed-breed dogs can have any disposition under the sun, depending what family traits win out. Help save a life and see how a mutt can enhance your own!

2. Volunteer to walk a shelter dog
Did you know that some shelter dogs rarely leave their kennels? Shelter staffs just do not have the time to dedicate to walking each dog every day, and could really use the extra help that volunteering gives. Volunteering to walk shelter dogs also gives you an opportunity to help raise awareness, recruit people with time and compassion, and encourage animal lovers to visit their local shelter to learn about volunteer opportunities.

3. Donate food and other supplies needed to your local animal shelter
Many shelters rely solely on the good hearts and goodwill of those who donate. While there are some government assisted programs that provide some funding to animal shelters, the wait lists are long and it's not always guaranteed that they'll get the funding they need to properly maintain and care for the animals that arrive in their shelters daily. Often times, shelters will post supply need lists on their websites or social media pages, so subscribe to your local shelter's facebook or website page and keep an eye out for their next need list.

4. Make a donation in the memory of a loved dog who has crossed the Rainbow Bridge
There comes a time in every pet owner's life that they must say goodbye to their furry friend. It's never easy, and another pet just cannot replace that void. But what may help ease some of the heartache and give you peaceful closure is to make a donation to your local shelter in memory of your beloved dog who has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. In doing so, you're honoring the life of your pet and passing along the unconditional love they received from you to those that are not as fortunate to have a loving furever home and family.

5. Spread the word to raise awareness
You can purchase clothing, canvas totes and collectible mugs to show your support for mutts. While you're spending time with your mutt or volunteering your time at your local shelter snap a few pictures and post them on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #NationalMuttDay. Or you can even do some research to locate dog walk events taking place near you and register, then invite your friends to join you!

The biggest percentage of dogs abandoned and euthanized is due to the constant over-breeding and public desire of designer dogs and purebred puppies that are sold to pet stores supplied by puppy mills that often produce ill and horribly neglected animals. This special day was created to raise awareness of the plight of mixed breed dogs in shelters around the nation, as approximately 80% of dogs in shelters are mixed breeds. The mission behind National Mutt Day is to educate the public about the overwhelming number of mixed breed dogs that desperately await new homes and to celebrate the amazing characteristics that the mix of breeds creates in each individual dog.

Celebrate National Mutt Day by spending time with the mutts in your life or by volunteering at your local shelter. Your efforts to educate and bring awareness to this cause will be appreciated and won't go unnoticed. If you'd like to donate supplies to your local shelter, we've got great products that shelters would love to have - such as a raised dog bed or waterproof crate pads. Visit our website today to get your donation items ordered!

11 Fun Facts About Dogs

We at PetCot Company adore all things canine. And why wouldn't we? Dogs offer companionship and unconditional love. They are funny, adorable, and charismatic. Not only that, but they offer physical, emotional, and social benefits to our lives each and every day. If you love dogs as much as we do, you'll enjoy learning these fun facts we're sharing with you this week that are all about dogs!

11 Fun Facts About Dogs

1. A typical dog has the same brain aptitude level as a toddler. Dogs can comprehend about 250 words and count up to 5.

2. Eighty percent of dog owners shower their pets with gifts (such as a premium raised dog bed) on special occasions like birthdays and holidays. On holidays, over half of these pets are included in the signature of family cards.

3. In the United States, about 1 million dog owners have named their pets the primary beneficiary in their wills.

4. The typical body temperature for a dog is between 101 and 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit, compared to 98.6 for humans.

5. Dogs actually do sweat, but only through the pads on their paws.

6. In addition to sweating through their paw pads, dogs pant to cool themselves off. A panting dog can take 300-400 breaths (compared to his regular 30-40) with very little effort.

7. Dogs and humans have the same type of slow wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement (REM) and during this REM stage dogs can dream. The twitching and paw movements that occur during their sleep are signs that your pet is dreaming.

8. 45% of dogs sleep in their owner’s bed (we’re pretty sure a large percentage also hog the blankets!).

9. Dogs curl up in a ball when they sleep due to an age-old instinct to keep themselves warm and protect their abdomen and vital organs from predators.

10. Dogs are not colorblind. They are able to detect color in their vision, just not as vividly as humans.

11. More dogs are called Max, Jake, Maggie or Molly than any other pet names.

We hope you enjoyed learning these 11 fun facts about dogs. We know we sure did! If you have any fun facts about dogs that you know of that we didn't list above, we encourage you to share them with us in the comments.

Essential Commands To Train Your Dog - Part 2

As promised, the PetCot Company is delivering part 2 of our list of essential commands to train your dog. These are commands we feel are necessary to keep your dog safe while out in public, and to keep those around you safe as well. For many reasons, training your dog to have good manners and to listen when commanded is so very important. Too many mishaps can come into play if your dog is not trained these essential commands that could save their life. So without further ado, here are the next 3 essential commands the PetCot Company suggests training your dog.

Leave it
Dogs by nature are curious. They will get into anything they can if given the opportunity. That's why we cannot stress enough the importance of training the "leave it" command. Many dogs have short attention spans or have one-track minds. Once they've got their eyes set on something they really want, it's tough to break through that barrier. By teaching them to "leave it", you will have an easier time redirecting their attention to you instead of whatever it is they're after. Start out by holding a treat in your hand palm closed in front of your dog's nose. When the dog tries to get to the treat in your hand, say "leave it" and pull away.

As soon as your dog's attention has broken away from the treat to you, praise them. If you praise with treats, do not use the hand you're training with. That treat is off limits. Once your dog has mastered leaving the treat in your hand alone, you can step up the difficulty level. Hold the treat out palm open so your dog can see it. As soon as your dog goes for the treat, close your palm and say "leave it." Go through the same process - praise when they revert their attention to you. Once your dog has mastered "leave it" from an open palm, try putting a treat on the floor and walking your dog by on a leash. Anytime the dog goes for the treat, say "leave it" and redirect them away from the treat. As soon as they redirect their attention without reminder or assistance, praise.

Heel
The purpose for the "heel" command is to teach your dog to stay by your side. When they are heeling, they are not permitted to walk ahead or behind you, and they are to stop when you stop and walk when you walk. This skill is important because it reminds your dog that you are in charge. It's also extremely beneficial because your dog will not be pulling you along during walks and putting you in a position in which you can't control.

Put your dog on a leash and position them on your left hand side. Have them sit and stay until you're ready to walk. Keep a few treats in your left hand for praising. As soon as you're ready to walk say "heel" and start walking forward. If your dog stays at your side and walks at your pace, give them a treat every few steps. If your dog begins to veer off, call their attention back to you, make them sit and stay and start again once their focus is on you.

After a few sessions of doing this, keep the treats in your pocket instead of your hand and use more verbal praise than treats. Eventually, your dog will learn to "heel" without being rewarded by treats. This is an advanced command and will take time and patience to learn, so just stick with it and your efforts will pay off.

Wait
The "wait" command is a great command that you can train your dog to do that will come in handy on several occasions. Whether you're getting them out of the car at the vet's office, getting ready to take them on a leash walk, trying to leave for work in the morning, or even just letting them out of their crate, this command can be a lot of help in controlling your dog's excitement.

To start with training the "wait" command, you first need to eliminate bolting as an option for them. So before opening a door, leash confine, crate, or put your dog in a separate room. That way your dog understands that bolting out the door when it opens is NOT an option. Once you're ready to start on "wait", leash your dog, walk to the door, and ask them to sit. As soon as they do, reach for the door handle. If your dog stands up, let go of the handle and ask them to sit. This may take a few tries. Once you can turn the doorknob without your dog standing, you can give the "go ahead" and reward them by taking them for a brief walk so they don't get frustrated with this exercise.

As you're working on this, extend the time that your dog has to stay seated before releasing them to "go ahead," and work towards being able to open the door completely without your dog taking off before being released with "go ahead." Once your dog has this command down for going outside, it'll be easy for you to use it when crating your dog, and when placing your dog in their safe place such as their premier raised dog bed.

With last week's blog and this week's blog, you've now got 7 essential commands to train your dog. Not only will training your dog these commands make your life easier, but they will also help to keep your dog safe. When training your dog, the PetCot Company encourages positive reinforcement and rewarding. 4 Pup-tastic Ways to Include Your Fur Baby in Easter Celebrations!

Everyone enjoys celebrating the holidays. We do so in many ways - whether it's dressing in our best, gift-giving, enjoying a meal with family and friends, there's always some way to celebrate any holiday. With Easter quickly approaching, The PetCot Company wants to share some fun pet-friendly ways to include your fur-babies in on this upcoming celebration! Here's what you can do to include your favorite fuzz ball on Easter Sunday:

Make your Fur Baby an Easter Basket

Pets enjoy getting new things just as much (if not more) than we do. Don't forget your furry friend when you're picking up stuff for the kid's Easter baskets. Include some tasty treats, new chew toys, a new clean collar, and a shiny new name tag. Since spring is here and you're already working on your spring cleaning, now is also a great time to buy them a new comfortable raised dog bed to go with their goodies!

Create an "Easter Egg Hunt" just for them

Give a dog a bone, he'll chew on it for days. Hide dog treats throughout the house and yard and send them on a hunt, and you'll create an entertaining experience for them that the whole family can enjoy and laugh about. This is a great way for the kiddos to get involved in helping out with Easter as well - let them hide the treats. This will keep them busy while you're prepping dinner and entertaining guests. Your dog will love finding treats around every corner and will likely help you come up with new hiding spots to use next year too. Make sure to have your camera on hand, because you're sure to have some hilarious moments you'll want to capture!

Prepare them a Special Meal to Enjoy with the Family

One of the best parts about a family get-together for Easter is getting to spend time together around the dinner table. Your pet wants to be a part of these special moments too. While it's not ideal for them to sit at your guest's feet and beg for scraps, you can definitely include them in this special occasion by preparing them their own fancy Easter dinner nearby so they feel included. If you typically feed dry food only, spice it up with some wet food and sprinkle some tasty treats on top. Your precious pet will adore your efforts to include them in your special family meal.

Dress them in their Sunday Best

Who doesn't love a freshly bathed dog in bows?! ADORABLE! If you're looking fabulous in your Sunday best, so should your pet. Give them a bath and comb their hair so they smell nice and look great for company. Pick out a cute bow or bandanna to match your outfit so you and your furry friend match. If your pooch is cool with it, you can even go to the extremes and deck them out in a full Easter outfit - complete with bunny ears! It will make for some super adorable family photos.

There you go! With these fun-filled ideas from the PetCot Company, your love pug will feel adored and included on Easter Sunday. You'll get some great pictures to share for years to come, and you'll likely get showered with love and affection from your fur baby. For your pet's Easter basket essentials, visit our website today for a premium raised pet bed and other pet supplies!

3 Pup-Approved Reasons to Switch Your Pet's Bedding

Our pets are our best friends. So why do we let them sleep on the floor or on an uncomfortable and filthy cushioned bed when we know they deserve the best? Perhaps it's because you don't know of any other solutions that would be more pet-friendly. Perhaps it's because you don't know the benefits of getting your pets off the floor and into a premier raised pet bed. Well, we're here to change that. Check out our 3 puptastic reasons why you should stop wasting your time, money, and energy with pillow beds for your pets.

Skip the Stuffing

We've all been there and done that when it comes to your fur baby discovering the insides of a favorite stuffed toy or unsuspecting pillow. It's not a pleasant sight, and it certainly isn't enjoyable to clean up after. Why would you keep throwing money away on those expensive stuffed beds just to have it destroyed in the first week of purchase? You won't have to worry about picking up stuffing with a premium raised dog bed from the PetCot Co. These beds are made for durability with a patented design and steel construction. No plastic pieces that can crack and break.

Super Easy to Clean

If you've ever had a pet who slept on a cushion bed, you know what we mean when we say there is no smell like it - and we don't mean that in a good way! Cushioned beds are often hard to clean and almost impossible to prevent unpleasant odors and bacteria from clinging. PetCot raised dog beds are comfortable, hygienic, and super easy to clean with water, soap and a cloth or hose - meaning less laundry and lingering odors for you!

Promote a Healthy Future

You don't enjoy sleeping on the floor or a lumpy mattress. After sleeping on a hard floor or a lumpy pillow bed, dogs feel the same pains that we do - achy and stiff. Preventative solutions are the best way to keep your dog feeling like a pup for many years to come. That's why getting a raised bed for your fur baby is a must even if your pet doesn't have arthritis, hip dysplasia, or other joint problems. The elevated dog bed also allows for all around breathability which means your pet won't get too hot or cold no matter what time of year it is.

Stop spending money replacing those pesky pillow beds every few months, and get your pets the bed that they deserve! Treat them like the royalty you know they are and invest in a premier raised pet bed for your favorite cuddle buddy today. We've got a variety of sizes and colors (and accessories) to fit your pet's needs, your home's decor, and your budget. Trust us, you and your fur baby will have a howling good time after you've both had a comfortable night's rest!

The PetCot is available in four colors (brown tweed, hunter green, navy blue and sky blue) and four sizes (small - X-Large). Cover fabric options include our most popular, woven vinyl-coated polyester fabric that is breathable, dries quickly and is odor free. We also offer a 35 oz. vinyl option.

Our beds are the most durable on the market, and we offer affordable, easy to install replacement parts, should you need them. Just replace the part - not the whole bed!

Fleece

The PetCot is the most relaxing bed on the market. For an added touch of comfort, add a PetCot fleece cover. Made of high-quality, synthetic lambs wool exclusively for the PetCot. Attaches securely with 1" elastic. Machine washable. Available in all sizes.

Veterinary Recovery Pads

Our waterproof Recovery PetPads are made with thick, 22 oz. non-porous reinforced vinyl. To help keep the patient's body temperature stable, 3-1/2" closed cell foam is used to reflect heat up to the patient. A protective fabric on top of the pad allows you to insert a heating element of your choice. The pad works well with most controlled heating systems and is not included with the pad.

5 Reasons Why PetCot Beds Are Perfect For Kennels

Does your kennel go through many pet beds? Do you wish there was a bed that was durable enough to withstand chewing and digging, yet comfortable enough for even the pickiest of dogs? Then our premium raised dog beds are right for you and your kennel. Not only are our pet beds loved by pet owners, they are also used by kennels and veterinarians across the United States. Here are a few reasons why the PetCot bed is the perfect pet bed for kennels:

They Are Durable

Durability is one of the reasons why our raised pet bed is used in kennels across the U.S. With possibly hundreds of dogs using the pet beds in the kennel, you want something that will last. Our durable pet beds will withstand the wear and tear associated with running a kennel. You can also add on chew guards to protect the beds from those that do like to chew. If you do have a dog chew or dig his way through our raised beds, you can just order a replacement part. You don’t have to buy a new bed – just the part!

They Can Be Used Inside and Outside

PetCot beds can be used inside and outside, which makes them the perfect addition to any kennel. The fabric is UV light resistance so it will not easily fade in the sun. It is also fast drying, so there is no need to worry if it gets left out on a rainy day. Having a bed so versatile will make things easy no matter what the day’s plans include!

They are Hygienic and Easy-To-Clean

Our pet beds provide comfort and durability while NOT providing a breeding ground for bacteria. Hygiene is important for kennels, especially with many animals from different backgrounds coming and going. Having so many animals in a combined space means there are lots of germs and odors. Having a hygienic pet bed can help keep your kennel odor and germ free.

They Are Easy-To-Use

The PetCot Company makes it easy for kennel owners to find the best pet bed for their needs. The PetCot beds come in a variety of different sizes to fit any type of kennel. Our quality pet beds also come preassembled (except XL) so you don’t have to spend extra time setting up, which means you can spend more time taking care of your business.

Great for All Dogs!

Our raised beds are great for all dogs. The 4 ½ inch raise is tall enough to give a comfortable flex, but still short enough to for easy off and on for older dogs. The PetCot bed comes in a variety of sizing so you can stock your kennel with something for everyone.
