Make Your Recent Adoption an Easy Transition

At the PetCot Company, we love to hear all of the happy stories that come about when a family opens their home to a pet in need. This can be a big change for your family, though, especially when you get an older dog who may need some correctional training or extra special love after a less than ideal situation. So, in honor of October being Adopt a Dog month and because we care about you and your pet, we have a few tips to help make the your recent adoption an easy transition.

Keep Calm
When you bring your new pet into the home, you should try to keep the excitement to a minimum. When adopting a dog from a shelter, it's important to keep in mind that you may not know the history of the dog and may not know if something will trigger a less than ideal reaction. If your recently adopted dog was picked up off of the street, there is a lot of history that you do not know. By keeping everything calm in the new environment, you can help keep stimulation at a minimum. Your new dog may have reactions to situations that are unexpected because of previous "training" and when you keep a calm demeanor, you can help your dog work through those reactions.

Give Them a Space
Give your new dog a space that they can call their own. It's important, especially in a busy household, that your dog has a spot that they can go to where they aren't required to interact. They can sleep, relax, watch you play, and have a safe spot to do all of those things. Our raised pet bed is ideal for your new pet because it gives them a space to call their own. You can customize it with a blanket of their very own, putting a few toys on it, and before you know it - they will love it. The best part is, our premium pet beds are easy to clean, do not harbor bacteria, and will grow with your pet whether you adopted a puppy or a full grown dog.

Create a Schedule
Ease your pet into their new life with a consistent schedule. In addition to exercise, dogs crave love and attention and thrive on an established routine. This is especially important in terms of potty breaks and feeding times. Also, dogs need enough sleep to function effectively When your dog knows what's expected of them during certain times of the day it can create a safe environment for him to relax and enjoy.

Decide Your Commands
Determine which commands are most important for you to use with your new dog and make sure the entire household knows what they are and how to use them. You want your new dog to adapt to their home, know who is the boss, and keep some continuity. This can all be achieved when everyone is using the same commands, and everyone is training together. Even with young children in the house, it's important to make sure that they know how to work with your new family member, and what is appropriate for interaction.

Work With a Trainer
Don't be afraid to hire a trainer, or at the very least, work closely with your vet. When you first bring your dog home, they may still be shy and timid. They may not know how to react to situations, and they may overreact in some instances. By having professionals working closely with you and your pet, they can help you overcome hurdles that you may find at the very beginning, or that may surface months later as they get acclimated and you get to know them better.

Welcome Home!
We are so excited that you've opened your home to your new family member. There may be a lot of new changes for everyone in the next few weeks, and it's important to have all of the tools you need from the beginning. When you bring your new dog home, introducing them to their new PetCot is a great way to welcome them to their new space. 5 Ways to Celebrate National Mutt Day

This coming Monday, July 31st is National Mutt Day, also known as National Mixed Breed Dog Day! This widely celebrated holiday was created in 2005 by Celebrity Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Welfare Advocate, Colleen Paige. National Mutt Day is all about embracing, saving and celebrating mixed breed dogs. So, in honor of this wonderful pet holiday, the PetCot Company is offering 5 ways in which you can celebrate the mutts in your life!

1. Visit your local animal shelter and adopt a new friend
Dog lovers know every canine is one-of-a-kind, but mixed-breed dogs are truly unique thanks to their grab-bag of genes. Mutts come in every shape, size, scruff, and shade you can think of! Personality-wise, too, mixed-breed dogs can have any disposition under the sun, depending what family traits win out. Help save a life and see how a mutt can enhance your own!

2. Volunteer to walk a shelter dog
Did you know that some shelter dogs rarely leave their kennels? Shelter staffs just do not have the time to dedicate to walking each dog every day, and could really use the extra help that volunteering gives. Volunteering to walk shelter dogs also gives you an opportunity to help raise awareness, recruit people with time and compassion, and encourage animal lovers to visit their local shelter to learn about volunteer opportunities.

3. Donate food and other supplies needed to your local animal shelter
Many shelters rely solely on the good hearts and goodwill of those who donate. While there are some government assisted programs that provide some funding to animal shelters, the wait lists are long and it's not always guaranteed that they'll get the funding they need to properly maintain and care for the animals that arrive in their shelters daily. Often times, shelters will post supply need lists on their websites or social media pages, so subscribe to your local shelter's facebook or website page and keep an eye out for their next need list.

4. Make a donation in the memory of a loved dog who has crossed the Rainbow Bridge
There comes a time in every pet owner's life that they must say goodbye to their furry friend. It's never easy, and another pet just cannot replace that void. But what may help ease some of the heartache and give you peaceful closure is to make a donation to your local shelter in memory of your beloved dog who has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. In doing so, you're honoring the life of your pet and passing along the unconditional love they received from you to those that are not as fortunate to have a loving furever home and family.

5. Spread the word to raise awareness
You can purchase clothing, canvas totes and collectible mugs to show your support for mutts. While you're spending time with your mutt or volunteering your time at your local shelter snap a few pictures and post them on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #NationalMuttDay. Or you can even do some research to locate dog walk events taking place near you and register, then invite your friends to join you!

The biggest percentage of dogs abandoned and euthanized is due to the constant over-breeding and public desire of designer dogs and purebred puppies that are sold to pet stores supplied by puppy mills that often produce ill and horribly neglected animals. This special day was created to raise awareness of the plight of mixed breed dogs in shelters around the nation, as approximately 80% of dogs in shelters are mixed breeds. The mission behind National Mutt Day is to educate the public about the overwhelming number of mixed breed dogs that desperately await new homes and to celebrate the amazing characteristics that the mix of breeds creates in each individual dog.

Celebrate National Mutt Day by spending time with the mutts in your life or by volunteering at your local shelter. Your efforts to educate and bring awareness to this cause will be appreciated and won't go unnoticed. If you'd like to donate supplies to your local shelter, we've got great products that shelters would love to have - such as a raised dog bed or waterproof crate pads. Visit our website today to get your donation items ordered!

HEY - It's National Pet Day!

Did you know that today is National Pet Day? Of course, The PetCot Company is excited to have another reason to celebrate the fur babies in our lives! National Pet Day was founded in 2006 by Animal Welfare Advocate Colleen Paige, to celebrate the joy pets bring to our lives and to create public awareness of many different kinds of animals awaiting a forever home in shelters and rescues all around the globe.

While we show our pets love and affection every day, National Pet Day is all about giving special recognition to those who may not have the luxury of a loving caring home or family. So, in honor of this very special day, The PetCot Company has decided to help you out with ways to celebrate the fur babies in your home and your community!

9 Purrfect Ways to Celebrate National Pet Day:

  1. Adopt a pet from your local shelter or pure breed rescue organization.
  2. Volunteer at your local shelter and offer to care for the animals.
  3. Donate raised dog beds, food, toys and other supplies to a favorite animal welfare organization.
  4. Organize a peaceful demonstration in front of your community pet store to educate on the importance of adopting from local shelters.
  5. Have a National Pet Day party and celebrate all your pets!
  6. Spend the day taking photos of your pets and then post them on our Facebook page!
  7. Assist an ill, elderly or a financially struggling neighbor or friend by purchasing pet food, hay or needed items for their pets.
  8. Buy your pet a fun new toy... or two... or five.
  9. Hire a professional pet photographer for a fun photo shoot.
Just remember while your pets may be well cared for and loved, there are pets out there who are still waiting for their chance to shine. Whether the case may be they're in a shelter awaiting their fur-ever home, or their human companion is unable to care for them due to health issues or other unavoidable factors, today is all about helping out orphaned pet companions to improve their health and improve their opportunities for adoption.

Celebrate this important holiday at home giving your pets a little extra pampering or out in your community spreading the word of needy pets and how to make a difference. Your efforts to educate and bring awareness to this cause will be appreciated and won't go unnoticed. If you'd like to donate supplies to your local shelter, we've got great products that shelters would love to have - such as a raised dog bed or waterproof crate pads. The First 30 Days With Your Adopted Dog

At the PetCot Company, we love to hear all of the happy stories that come about when a family opens their home to a pet in need. This can be a big change for your family, though, especially when you get an older dog who may need some correctional training or extra special love after a less than ideal situation. Because we care about you and your pet, we have a few tips to help make the first month with your furry friend an easy transition.

Decide Your Commands

It's important to decide on the commands that you want to use with your new dog and make sure the entire household knows what they are and how to use them. You want your new dog to adapt to their home, know who is the boss, and keep some continuity. This can all be achieved when everyone is using the same commands, and everyone is training together. Even with young children in the house, it's important to make sure that they know how to work with your new family member, and what is appropriate for interaction.

Keep Calm

It's important to keep your home calm when you bring your new pet into the home. While many new owners know the background of their new four-legged friend - there are many who know nothing at all. If your new dog was picked up off of the street, there is a lot of history that you do not know. By keeping everything calm in the new environment, you can help keep stimulation at a minimum. Your new dog may have reactions to situations that are unexpected because of previous "training" and when you keep a calm demeanor, you can help your dog work through those reactions.

Create a Schedule

It's important to incorporate your pet into their new life and their new schedule. Stick to the same schedule every day when it comes to feeding and exercise. When your dog knows what's expected of them during certain times of the day it can create a safe environment for him to relax and enjoy.

Work With a Trainer

Don't be afraid to hire a trainer or at the very least work closely with your vet. When you first bring your dog home, they may still be shy and timid. They may not know how to react to situations, and they make overreact in some instances. By having professionals working closely with you and your pet, they can help you overcome hurdles that you may find at the very beginning, or that may surface months later as they get acclimated and you get to know them better.

Give Them a Space

Finally, it's important to give your new dog a space that they can call their own. The best part is, our premium pet beds are easy to clean, do not harbor bacteria, and will grow with your pet whether you got them at a young age or you got an older dog.
