Is Your Dog a Nap Champion?

Ever notice how much your doggie seems to love to snuggle up and take a little snooze... seemingly every time you turn around? It may seem over the top and alarming, but most dogs actually require quite a bit of rest to maintain their energy and health. So why do our dogs need so much sleep? There's actually several very good reasons. Let's find out!

They Need to Regenerate Energy
If you really think about it, dog's sleep periods typically don't last for several hours at a time like ours do. For humans, We typically go all day without a snooze, then catch up by resting for about 6-9 hours during the night. Dogs, however, don't sleep like we do. Instead, they take brief "catnaps" throughout the day and rarely sleep very deeply. So are they really actually getting a rested sleep when they do lay their heads down for a nap?

Breed Makes a Difference
The amount of sleep dogs need also depends on what they are bred to do. For example, dogs who are bred for working tend to stay awake because of the desire to work and stay active that are engrained in their DNA. Dogs that have tasks to hold their attention will spend most of the day active, dedicated to completing those tasks. Dogs that aren't bred for a specific purpose and lead more sedentary lifestyles, however, will spend most of the day laying around catching some shut eye.

Factor in Dog's Age and Size
On average, dogs spend about 12-to-14 hours of the 24-hour cycle sleeping. Older dogs typically need more sleep because like human seniors and the elderly, day-to-day living presents more challenges and they tire more easily. Puppies spend their awake-time exploring, playing and growing, so they need as much as 18 to 20 hours of sleep each day to recharge their batteries. And of course, all dogs need sleep, but it tends to be the bigger breeds that are known for constant dozing probably due to their rapid growth and shorter life span.

Your Dog's Health
Sleeping is an essential part of dogs' everyday routines, so you shouldn't be concerned if your dog sleeps often. However, if you notice a sudden or dramatic change in your dog's sleeping habits or something seems a little off, it's a good idea to consult your veterinarian. Excessive sleep has been linked to conditions such as canine depression, diabetes, and hypothyroidism.

Life Changes Can Affect Your Dog
Just like humans, dogs can require some time to recoup after experiencing any sudden life changes. Because dogs adapt so well to their original environments, any shift in their usual experiences may affect them. So if your dog has experienced an alteration in their normal schedule or lifestyle, such as a move to a new home, losing a companion, or even an addition to the family, you may notice a change in their sleep habits. Understandably, dogs may need extra sleep to get their mood and energy level back to normal.

Regardless of how often or how little your fur baby sleeps, one thing is certain. Your precious pooch needs a comfy clean place to rest that adorable head when nap time comes calling. Be sure that your dog's comfort is top of mind with a PetCot! PetCot raised dog beds provide optimal comfort and support for dogs (and other pets) of all sizes. These premium raised pet beds protect dogs from the breeding ground of bacteria and odor found in traditional lumpy pillow dog beds, while keeping your dog cool and cozy.

3 Reasons Your Pets Need a PetCot

When pet parents ask what items they need to purchase for their dog, a good dog bed is always at the top of the list - along with a collar, leash, food, and feeding dishes. Dog beds are extremely important. In fact, we consider beds essential for all dogs regardless of size, breed, or age. Pet beds provide more than a place to rest their heads, they provide security. While many people think that their dogs can curl up on the floor, in many cases that isn't the most ideal option for your furry friend. Here are a few reasons that a PetCot bed will benefit your pup's life.

1. SUPER EASY TO CLEAN
Just like humans, dogs can be rather messy. The dander, dog hair, sweat and drool can often cause their beds to be disgusting. A PetCot bed is easy to clean, so that you don't have to worry about what is living inside that plush bedding. The suspended bed also allows for plenty of air movement, so your pet is always getting plenty of air, and the bed can fully dry out when they are not using it. We have many accessories you can pair with your PetCot bed to make it even cleaner for your pet.

A dog bed can also help keep your home clean! By giving your pet a place to sleep and rest, not only will it keep them off of your couch and bed, but it can limit the amount of hair that gets on your furniture as well. It's much easier to take the cover off of a PetCot bed than it is to wash, vacuum, or roller your entire living room set. Purchase one of our easy to clean pet beds today and see how much faster it is to keep your area clean!

2. PROMOTES GOOD HEALTH
As your dog gets older you may find that they begin to suffer with health problems. Anything from joint issues to hip pains can all be even more painful without the proper tools. A PetCot bed gives them a place to lay down and take the pressure off of their aching joints. While our beds are perfectly designed so that even your older dog won't have trouble getting off of it, we also sell accessories to make it even more comfortable for them. We offer an orthopedic dog bed insert that is made specifically for your PetCot, and your older dog in mind. The extra foam will ease aches and pains, making recovery easier.

3. A PLACE OF THEIR OWN
Sometimes your pet just wants a place that they can call their own, especially if you have more than one. A pet provides them that place where they can nap peacefully, re energize from a long day, or even go when they're scared. Our premium raised dog beds come in many sizes, so your dog will have the space they need to spread out and get comfortable.

Another thing to note, is that giving your dog a place to sleep can help keep him from sleeping in the areas that you don't want him to. If your bed, and the couch are off limits, he needs a place that he can call his own without laying claim to your spots. To make sure that he'll use it though, you have to make sure and get the right size.

MADE WITH CONVENIENCE IN MIND
Our beds were made to fill a need in the pet bed industry. They are fully assembled when you receive them and ready to use immediately. Our pet beds are also stackable, so if you have several of them and need to store them for a short period, or travel with them, they will be more convenient. If you are ready to join the PetCot family and learn how our beds will improve your pet's life, order online today!

Make Your Recent Adoption an Easy Transition

At the PetCot Company, we love to hear all of the happy stories that come about when a family opens their home to a pet in need. This can be a big change for your family, though, especially when you get an older dog who may need some correctional training or extra special love after a less than ideal situation. So, in honor of October being Adopt a Dog month and because we care about you and your pet, we have a few tips to help make the your recent adoption an easy transition.

Keep Calm
When you bring your new pet into the home, you should try to keep the excitement to a minimum. When adopting a dog from a shelter, it's important to keep in mind that you may not know the history of the dog and may not know if something will trigger a less than ideal reaction. If your recently adopted dog was picked up off of the street, there is a lot of history that you do not know. By keeping everything calm in the new environment, you can help keep stimulation at a minimum. Your new dog may have reactions to situations that are unexpected because of previous "training" and when you keep a calm demeanor, you can help your dog work through those reactions.

Give Them a Space
Give your new dog a space that they can call their own. It's important, especially in a busy household, that your dog has a spot that they can go to where they aren't required to interact. They can sleep, relax, watch you play, and have a safe spot to do all of those things. Our raised pet bed is ideal for your new pet because it gives them a space to call their own. You can customize it with a blanket of their very own, putting a few toys on it, and before you know it - they will love it. The best part is, our premium pet beds are easy to clean, do not harbor bacteria, and will grow with your pet whether you adopted a puppy or a full grown dog.

Create a Schedule
Ease your pet into their new life with a consistent schedule. In addition to exercise, dogs crave love and attention and thrive on an established routine. This is especially important in terms of potty breaks and feeding times. Also, dogs need enough sleep to function effectively When your dog knows what's expected of them during certain times of the day it can create a safe environment for him to relax and enjoy.

Decide Your Commands
Determine which commands are most important for you to use with your new dog and make sure the entire household knows what they are and how to use them. You want your new dog to adapt to their home, know who is the boss, and keep some continuity. This can all be achieved when everyone is using the same commands, and everyone is training together. Even with young children in the house, it's important to make sure that they know how to work with your new family member, and what is appropriate for interaction.

Work With a Trainer
Don't be afraid to hire a trainer, or at the very least, work closely with your vet. When you first bring your dog home, they may still be shy and timid. They may not know how to react to situations, and they may overreact in some instances. By having professionals working closely with you and your pet, they can help you overcome hurdles that you may find at the very beginning, or that may surface months later as they get acclimated and you get to know them better.

Welcome Home!
We are so excited that you've opened your home to your new family member. There may be a lot of new changes for everyone in the next few weeks, and it's important to have all of the tools you need from the beginning. When you bring your new dog home, introducing them to their new PetCot is a great way to welcome them to their new space. Visit our website today to find the perfect size and color, and give Fido some love from the entire PetCot Company.

5 Ways to be a Responsible Dog Owner

A dog's loyalty, devotion, and unconditional love is an unmatched reward that dog owners are so privileged to experience. But owning a dog isn't just a privilege. It's a huge responsibility. They require time, care, and undivided attention. If you're considering taking a dog in, you need to seriously consider the commitment that dog ownership takes. If you already have a dog, are you doing what you need to do to fulfill your obligations as a pet owner? This week, we're sharing with you 5 very important ways to ensure that you're being a responsible dog owner - take a look:

1. Be a Canine Ambassador
One irresponsible dog owner in town can make life difficult for dog owners all over. So, as a dog owner, you are responsible not only for your own dog's well being, but for the status of dogs everywhere. Having a friendly, clean, well-mannered dog reflects positively on the species and may help protect our rights to own companion animals. So when you are out with your dog, be respectful of local animals laws and of your neighbors, and make sure to pick up after your pet during walks.

2. Promote a Healthy Lifestyle for Your Dog
Part of responsible dog ownership is to ensure a healthy lifestyle. There's a lot you must do to maintain your dog's health. First of all, it's important to schedule routine check ups with your veterinarian to keep track of your dog's health and keep up with vaccinations to prevent disease and illness. You also need to maintain your dog's hygiene to avoid ticks, fleas, and parasites. We offer easy-to-clean premium raised dog beds that help to prevent bacteria buildup and parasites. Groom and clip their nails routinely to avoid fur matting or injury. Feed your dog a well-balanced healthy diet to promote healthy weight, and exercise him regularly.

3. Keep Your Dog Safe and Secure
It's important to think about the safety of your dog BEFORE it's too late. Attach an identification tag with updated contact information to their collar. Microchipping is a method of permanently identifying your dog, and can be invaluable in recovering your dog should he become lost. Make arrangements for your dog's care when you go away. Enlist a family member or friend to take care of your dog in the event of a sudden illness, hospitalization or other emergency.

4. Train Your Dog Even After Pup Stage
Teach your dog basic commands such as sit, stay, come and down. Training your dog will not only make your life easier, but can also keep your dog safe and well. Obedience classes can be a great experience for you and your dog. Not only will it give you a chance to get help with training, but it provides the perfect opportunity to socialize your dog. The more your dog learns of the world, the more comfortable he will be in it. By continuing to train your dog even after the puppy stage, you'll help your dog to remain a well-mannered member of society. Our pet care products are great for training!

5. Show Your Pooch Lots of Love
You are the center of your dog's world. You may be tired after a long day at work, but your dog has spent the day anxiously awaiting your return. Reward that loyalty with your time. Dogs love to play. Set aside time each day for play sessions. Take your dog on frequent walks. Give your dog treats. Scratch your dog's belly often. Include your dog in family activities. Make sure your dog has a cozy place to rest, such as a PetCot dog bed. Whatever it is you choose to do, you'll be showing your pooch just how much you love him by giving him your undivided attention, and that's all he really wants.

Owning a dog is a great privilege, as well as a great responsibility. And it's something that should not be taken lightly or without serious consideration. So, if you're a pet owner looking for ways to give back for all of the love and happiness your dog gives you, or if you don't have a dog but are considering getting one, we hope that these tips will help to serve you well.

A happy pet makes a happy owner, and a comfortable pet is a happy pet. Are you ready to see why purchasing a PetCot bed will be the last premium pet bed you have to purchase? A Healthy Balanced Diet Equals A Healthy Pet!

Your furry friend works hard to keep up with you! They run and play, nap and cuddle, and for all of that, they need the right nutrition to make sure they can continue to do all of these things. Whether you have a cat or dog, there are specific foods that your pet needs at different stages of their life so they can continue to live up to all of their potential. Here at the PetCot company, we realize the value of having the right tools, whether that's a raised pet bed or a delicious and nutritious dog food. Here are a few ways you can make sure you're getting the right food for your pet.

If you have any concerns about your pet's eating habits, what they should or shouldn't eat, or the quantity or quality - please consult your veterinarian for more information.

Consider Their Stage of Life

It's important to realize that your pet's stage of life can influence the types of food they need. While a young pet will need plenty of proteins and vitamins so they can build a strong frame as they grow, an older pet may need something that helps support their aging body and is easily digestible. Pet food isn't a one size fits all.

Look At The Ingredients

If you aren't sure what type of food to get, you can always start by looking at the ingredients on the bag. They will be in order of quantity used, so you'll want to see some form of meat or fish as the first or second item on the list. You'll also want to find appropriate amounts of protein, carbohydrates, fiber and fats in a pet food.

While there are some who choose to get a grain free or gluten free dog food, keep in mind that there are studies saying that your pet isn't allergic to gluten. If you have any concerns about your pets allergies or diet you'll want to talk to your veterinarian. They can run tests on your furry friend to find out exactly what is happening in their body, and choose a food that works with them.

Compare the Guaranteed Analysis

The Guaranteed Analysis can be found on the back of your pet food bag. The chart lists the percentages of the different ingredients contained in the food, but you have to remember that the numbers are on an "as fed" basis and they don't take into account the amount of moisture in the food. Because different foods have different moisture levels, you'll want to determine the actual levels of moisture by converting wet food to Dry Matter.

Take Time Switching Food

Once you've compared the foods and you're ready to make the switch, remember that it's important to make a slow transition between the new food and the old. There are normal bacteria in your dog's digestive system that allow them to digest their food, and when you suddenly change it on them, they can have adverse effects, and it can be harder for them to transition.

One Transition That Doesn't Take Long At All

Did you know, there's one transition that you probably won't have to go through slowly with your pet? When you bring a PetCot home, many pets fall in love with it immediately, and don't need a transition period to get used to it! Throw a few toys on it, add their favorite blanket, and they are generally hooked to their new favorite premium pet bed. And the best part, is you can plan ahead with this by getting a bed that your pup will grow into. We know you care for every aspect of your pet, so from food to bedding, PetCot is here to make sure you have what you need to love your pet longer! Visit our website to check out our products, and find the best one for you!

FAQs About Vaccinating Your Pet

August is National Immunization Awareness Month, and while this particular holiday is typically meant to raise awareness of the importance of vaccines for humans, it still serves as a great reminder that your dogs also need routine vaccines to prevent illnesses and diseases. Vaccinating your dog has long been considered one of the easiest ways to help them live long, healthy lives. With the recent controversy of the risks incurred, you may have some questions about vaccinating. So this week, the PetCot Company offers answers to some common questions around the topic.

What Are Vaccines?
A vaccine is a biological substance designed to protect humans from infections caused by bacteria and viruses. Vaccines help prepare the body's immune system to fight the invasion of disease-causing organisms. Vaccines contain antigens, which look like the disease-causing organism to the immune system but don't actually cause disease. When the vaccine is introduced to the body, the immune system is mildly stimulated. If a dog is ever exposed to the real disease, his immune system is now prepared to recognize and fight it off entirely or reduce the severity of the illness.

How Important Are Vaccines?
When managing the health of your dog, vaccines are very important. However, not every dog needs to be vaccinated against every disease. Your veterinarian will best know what vaccinations are right for your dog. Factors that should be examined include age, medical history, environment, travel habits and lifestyle. Most vets highly recommend administering core vaccines to healthy dogs.

What are Core Vaccines?
Core vaccines are considered vital to all dogs based on the risk of exposure, severity of disease or transmissibility to humans. Canine parvovirus, distemper, canine hepatitis and rabies are considered core vaccines. Non-core vaccines are given depending on the dog’s exposure risk. These include vaccines against Bordetella bronchiseptica, Borrelia burgdorferi and Leptospira bacteria. Your veterinarian can determine what non-core vaccines are best for your dog, but the core vaccines are a must.

How Often Should You Vaccinate?
Typically it's recommended to vaccinate puppies as early as 6-8 weeks of age and at 3-4 week intervals until the puppy reaches 16 weeks old. After that, your pet's vaccine schedule will depend on the type of vaccine, your dog’s age, medical history, environment and lifestyle. Some adult dogs might receive certain vaccines, such as a rabies vaccine, annually, while other vaccines might be given every 3 years or longer.

Are There Risks or Side Effects?
Immunizations mildly stimulate an animal’s immune system in order to create protection from specific infectious diseases. This stimulation can create mild symptoms, ranging from soreness at the injection site to fever and allergic reactions. Another less common side effect is the development of immune mediated disease following vaccination. Most dogs show no ill effect from vaccination, but as with any medical procedure, there is a small chance of side effects. In most cases, the risks are much smaller than the risks of disease itself.

While there are controversial concerns about the safety of vaccinating, studies have shown that dogs who have been vaccinated live longer, healthier lives than those who have not. And while it may be hard to see your pup get shots, it's better to go through that brief moment of uncomfort than to watch your dog suffer from preventable illnesses and diseases. Vaccines can cause side effects that make your dog tired or sore, so after your pup's annual vaccines, make sure your dog has a comfy place to rest. A premium raised dog bed is perfect for keeping your dog comfortable and give them a place to feel safe after such an eventful visit. Visit our website to order your dog's PetCot bed today!

5 Ways to Spoil Your Pooch

If you have a dog, you probably think of them as a part of the family - your child, your baby! And you take good care of your family, no questions asked. We feel where you're coming from because we, too, love our dogs like they're our children, and we'd do anything to make them happy. Since August 10th has been deemed Spoil Your Dog Day, we've decided to share with you 5 ways to pamper your pooch!

1. Treat Your Pooch to a S-Paw Day
Everyone needs a special spa day to just relax and reset, including your dog! So, pamper your pooch with a nice relaxing day getting pretty and relaxing. Take your dog to the groomer for a bath, hair cut, and nail clip. Then, spend some time giving them a puppy massage, focusing on their paws for sure! You can even YouTube how to give a proper puppy massage if you're unsure of your massage giving skills.

2. Create a Designated Digging Area
What dog doesn't love to dig? We typically attempt to refrain from letting them dig, but it's in their nature. So, instead of battling their natural instinct to hide every single bone or toy you give them, give them a designated digging area that they can let their wild side go crazy! Designate a spot in your yard. Make a heaping pile of dirt and hide some of their favorite toys for them to dig for. This could give them the idea that it's okay to dig anywhere, so it's important to train your dog that this is their special spot and that other areas are off limits. Dogs are smart, so more than likely, your pup will catch on pretty quickly.

3. Go for a Road Trip that Doesn't Involve the Vet's Office
Some people have trouble convincing their pup to "go for a ride", and we understand that. The key to taking your dog for a car ride they'll enjoy is to do it sporadically, no just when they're going to the vet's office. If they begin to see a pattern, they'll associate the car with something unenjoyable. So load up your pooch, roll the windows down, and just enjoy the ride! You don't even have to have a real destination. But we bet if you throw in a surprise trip to the dog park or a pet store, your pup will quickly learn to love road trips with you!

4. Splurge on the Special Treats
Sure, you have the regular treats hanging around your house that you use for praising and training, but you know what we're talking about when we say SPECIAL treats! We mean the meaty, savory goodness that your dog salivates over - whether that's a huge raw beef bone or a scrumptious peanut butter delight, do something above the normal and give your dog something you know they'll love!

5. Pamper your Pooch with a Premium Dog Bed
Who doesn't want a super comfortable place to wind down and rest their head after a long day of fun and excitement? Your pet is certainly no exception to the rule! Spoil your pooch by upgrading their dirty stinky cushioned bed to a premium raised dog bed from PetCot. The PetCot dog bed provides comfort and support for Pets while NOT providing a breeding ground for bacteria and odor found in pillow beds. They also provide great support for preventing joint-related issues as your pet ages, making them the perfect beds for older dogs. Trust us, your pooch will LOVE this gift!

Now that you have 5 ways to spoil your pooch, you better get to it. Your favorite fur buddy is awaiting your attention! Don't forget to make a quick pit stop at www.PetCot.com to order your pup's premium raised dog bed, because a happy pet makes a happy owner, and a comfortable, spoiled pet is a happy pet!

Tips for Training Your New Puppy

From the first day you bring your pup home, you'll train them and teach them right from wrong. With so many important things to teach them, how are you supposed to know where to start? Many people wonder when the right time to start training their puppy is, and honestly, the answer is now. Start setting your puppy up for success today, and you'll be able to reinforce those habits for the rest of their life. Here are a few tips from trainers that will help you figure out what your puppy needs to learn, and how to teach it to them.

Start with Routines
It's important to start training your puppy on the routines that they'll be keeping in the coming weeks. Teach them where their food and water dishes are, and keep them in the same places, and feed them at the same times each day. Teach them where they'll be going to the bathroom, and always take them to the same place for continuity. Most importantly, continually train them about their bedtime. Keep their PetCot bed in the same place so they know where bedtime happens, and then be sure to reinforce what time they wake up and what time they go to sleep. These routines will be just as valuable for you as it is for them.

Teach Words
The next step is to start reinforcing words in their vocabulary. "No," means stop what you're doing right now. "Good," reinforces that what they're doing is exemplary. These two words are generally introduced around 2-3 months old, and should be used when necessary. There are many other words you will want to add to their vocabulary like sit, stay, down, off, come, don't touch, drop it, go lie down, etc. These words should only be taught after "no" and "good" have been learned well.

Treat Training
While using treats can be a great incentive for your pup, it's not the most effective way to reinforce good behavior, or stop the bad. Treat training, in essence, is based solely off your pup wanting to eat or not. Suppose he goes running out the door after a squirrel, and even though you're tempting him with a treat, he wants to chase the squirrel more than eat a treat. Not only does that reinforce bad habits of not listening to you, but you're showing that if he doesn't want a treat he doesn't have to listen. It would be much more efficient to implement a training based on respect over treats.

Keep in mind that training with treats is not a bad thing, but it shouldn't be your sole method of 'bribing' your pet to obey you. Treats are initially used to help reinforce good behavior, and direct the pet to what you're wanting them to do, but as your training goes on, you should be weaning them off the treats and guiding them to do what you've asked solely based on the command and authority.

Respect Training
If your dog hears your words, understands them, and still chooses not to obey, this could be a sign that they don't respect you. It's important to establish respect in the relationship, not because you HAVE to be in charge, but because you can protect your pet better when they obey. If they are running out into the road, but don't listen to you when you say "come," they are in danger of running into oncoming traffic.

PetCot Beds Help You Train Your Pup
There are many important commands you will establish with your new furry friend, and our beds can help you to reinforce some of those commands. Many trainers use our PetCots to instruct dogs of all ages in the "place" command. Our pet beds aren't just used for training, though, our beds are kept in households all over the country to give your pet a great place to sleep, relax, and stay put when need be. You can order yours today on our website, www.PetCot.com.

11 Fun Facts About Dogs

We at PetCot Company adore all things canine. And why wouldn't we? Dogs offer companionship and unconditional love. They are funny, adorable, and charismatic. Not only that, but they offer physical, emotional, and social benefits to our lives each and every day. If you love dogs as much as we do, you'll enjoy learning these fun facts we're sharing with you this week that are all about dogs!

11 Fun Facts About Dogs

1. A typical dog has the same brain aptitude level as a toddler. Dogs can comprehend about 250 words and count up to 5.

2. Eighty percent of dog owners shower their pets with gifts (such as a premium raised dog bed) on special occasions like birthdays and holidays. On holidays, over half of these pets are included in the signature of family cards.

3. In the United States, about 1 million dog owners have named their pets the primary beneficiary in their wills.

4. The typical body temperature for a dog is between 101 and 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit, compared to 98.6 for humans.

5. Dogs actually do sweat, but only through the pads on their paws.

6. In addition to sweating through their paw pads, dogs pant to cool themselves off. A panting dog can take 300-400 breaths (compared to his regular 30-40) with very little effort.

7. Dogs and humans have the same type of slow wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement (REM) and during this REM stage dogs can dream. The twitching and paw movements that occur during their sleep are signs that your pet is dreaming.

8. 45% of dogs sleep in their owner’s bed (we’re pretty sure a large percentage also hog the blankets!).

9. Dogs curl up in a ball when they sleep due to an age-old instinct to keep themselves warm and protect their abdomen and vital organs from predators.

10. Dogs are not colorblind. They are able to detect color in their vision, just not as vividly as humans.

11. More dogs are called Max, Jake, Maggie or Molly than any other pet names.

We hope you enjoyed learning these 11 fun facts about dogs. We know we sure did! If you have any fun facts about dogs that you know of that we didn't list above, we encourage you to share them with us in the comments.

A PetCot Fit for Any Size Pet

The PetCot company has been providing quality raised dog beds to families and their furry friends since 2001. We have created a bed that not only looks nice in your home, but is also comfortable, hygienic, and better for your pet than the other beds on the market. Of course, when you're ready to purchase your elevated pet bed, there are a few important decisions you'll have to make, and one of the most important is choosing a bed size for your pet.

8 Ways to Keep Your Dog Cool This Summer

Summertime sparks the desire to get the family outdoors more often. And of course, you don't want to leave Sparky behind - after all, your pets are family too, right? While we always want to include our fur babies in family fun, it's important to remember that all that fur may not mix well with the warmer temperatures of summer. So, this week the PetCot Company has decided to share with you 8 tips to keep your furry buddy cool while enjoying summer fun with the family:

1. Don’t leave your pet in an unattended vehicle.

On a 75-degree day, the temperature inside a parked car can climb up to 115 degrees within an hour. Even with the windows down, a dog can easily overheat if left in these conditions. If you need to run errands and don't feel comfortable leaving your dog home alone take it to a doggy day care. It’ll save you the trouble of worrying about your dog while you’re out.

2. Avoid walking on hot surfaces like asphalt.

Your pup’s paws can be as sensitive as the soles of your feet. If the asphalt is too hot for you to walk on, chances are it’s too hot for your pup too. On a walk, try to alternate between asphalt, sidewalk, and grass so that your dog’s delicate paws don’t get overheated. If your dog is particularly sensitive, cover his paws with pet booties so he can stroll comfortably.

3. Supply lots of fresh, clean water.

Some dogs get a bit finicky with their water if there’s an odd scent in the bowl or if it’s been warming up in the sun for a while. Keeping a fresh, clean supply of H2O in your dog’s dish will ensure that your pup drinks more often and stays hydrated.

4. Don’t overexercise pets.

Dogs don’t always know their own limits. If you can tell your dog is breathing more rapidly or having some trouble chasing after a ball, slow things down and allow him to cool off. Outdoor activities are great but, instead of playing in the blazing afternoon sun, try tossing a ball around as the sun is setting.

5. Leave your dog at home on hot days.

Going to the beach and sitting out all day in the sun is something we humans enjoy, but it can leave pooches severely dehydrated. Even if you feel like the heat is bearable, remember, when dogs are exposed to moderately high temperatures over an extended period of time, their bodies might be unable to cool down.

6. Watch for signs of dehydration.

Dogs can't sweat. They cool off by panting, so an overheated dog will drool excessively. It will become lethargic, its eyes will be bloodshot, and it may appear a little pale. If you lift its skin, it will take longer than usual for the skin to fall back into place.

7. Take your dog swimming.

The best activity you can do in summertime or hot weather is swimming. Instead of walking the dog, take the dog on a swim! If you hold on and allow your dog to take you around the pool, it becomes a powerful bonding experience for the two of you, similar to the walk.

8. Get your dog a raised bed.

PetCot raised dog beds provide optimal comfort and support for dogs (and other pets) of all sizes. Our unique elevated dog bed allows your pet to rest easy while maintaining a comfortable body temperature all around. Durable and breathable, it provides dogs with a healthy, cool environment.
