3 Reasons Your Pets Need a PetCot

When pet parents ask what items they need to purchase for their dog, a good dog bed is always at the top of the list - along with a collar, leash, food, and feeding dishes. Dog beds are extremely important. In fact, we consider beds essential for all dogs regardless of size, breed, or age. Pet beds provide more than a place to rest their heads, they provide security. While many people think that their dogs can curl up on the floor, in many cases that isn't the most ideal option for your furry friend. Here are a few reasons that a PetCot bed will benefit your pup's life.

1. SUPER EASY TO CLEAN
Just like humans, dogs can be rather messy. The dander, dog hair, sweat and drool can often cause their beds to be disgusting. A PetCot bed is easy to clean, so that you don't have to worry about what is living inside that plush bedding. The suspended bed also allows for plenty of air movement, so your pet is always getting plenty of air, and the bed can fully dry out when they are not using it. We have many accessories you can pair with your PetCot bed to make it even cleaner for your pet.

A dog bed can also help keep your home clean! By giving your pet a place to sleep and rest, not only will it keep them off of your couch and bed, but it can limit the amount of hair that gets on your furniture as well. It's much easier to take the cover off of a PetCot bed than it is to wash, vacuum, or roller your entire living room set. Purchase one of our easy to clean pet beds today and see how much faster it is to keep your area clean!

2. PROMOTES GOOD HEALTH
As your dog gets older you may find that they begin to suffer with health problems. Anything from joint issues to hip pains can all be even more painful without the proper tools. A PetCot bed gives them a place to lay down and take the pressure off of their aching joints. While our beds are perfectly designed so that even your older dog won't have trouble getting off of it, we also sell accessories to make it even more comfortable for them. We offer an orthopedic dog bed insert that is made specifically for your PetCot, and your older dog in mind. The extra foam will ease aches and pains, making recovery easier.

3. A PLACE OF THEIR OWN
Sometimes your pet just wants a place that they can call their own, especially if you have more than one. A pet provides them that place where they can nap peacefully, re energize from a long day, or even go when they're scared. Our premium raised dog beds come in many sizes, so your dog will have the space they need to spread out and get comfortable.

Another thing to note, is that giving your dog a place to sleep can help keep him from sleeping in the areas that you don't want him to. If your bed, and the couch are off limits, he needs a place that he can call his own without laying claim to your spots. To make sure that he'll use it though, you have to make sure and get the right size.

MADE WITH CONVENIENCE IN MIND
Our beds were made to fill a need in the pet bed industry. They are fully assembled when you receive them and ready to use immediately. Our pet beds are also stackable, so if you have several of them and need to store them for a short period, or travel with them, they will be more convenient. If you are ready to join the PetCot family and learn how our beds will improve your pet's life, order online today!

Keep Your Pet Safe this Independence Day

Fourth of July is just around the corner, and we're all looking forward to the opportunity to celebrate and enjoy some amazing fireworks displays! It's a time of the year when the whole family gets together to grill out, spend some much needed time bonding, and shooting off or watching a professional fireworks show. While we do consider our pets to be family members, this is probably not a celebration that you want to try to involve your dog in. After all, more dogs are reported to be lost on Fourth of July than any other day of the year. Put simply, dogs just do not appreciate fireworks like we do. So this week, the PetCot Company wants to offer some tips to keep your beloved dog safe and happy this Independence Day.

PREPARE IN ADVANCE
Before the big celebration comes, make sure you're prepared. Update your dog's identity tags and make sure they're secured properly to his collar so as not to easily fall off. If your dog is chipped, make sure the contact information is updated so if your dog does get loose and is found, a vet clinic or shelter is able to reach you. If you do not have a safe, quiet place for your dog to be during the festivities, make arrangements for him to be boarded for the night.

HOSTING FESTIVITIES AT HOME
If you're planning to keep him home and holding festivities there, set up your dog's crate in a quiet location in your home that is set away from traffic and noise. When scared of sounds they can’t orient, they'll feel safer hiding out in their crate or on their comfy premium raised dog bed. If possible, keep the windows and curtains closed. Covering the crate or lowering the blinds can also be helpful. Removing visual stimulation can also help calm dogs. It's best to keep your dog in a room where the door can be closed and nobody will enter. If your dog gets out and sees an opportunity to jet, he may take off down the road.

ATTENDING FIREWORKS SHOWS
If you're planning to attend a fireworks show away from home, leave your dog at home. While it may feel like you're leaving him out of the fun, you're actually doing him a favor by not bringing him somewhere he'll become scared easily and won't have a safe place to go. Not to mention, it'll likely be pretty warm outdoors and your furry buddy would much rather enjoy the evening in the comfort of his own home in A/C. Be sure to leave your dog with plenty of toys to keep him busy. If he does become anxious from the fireworks going off around the neighborhood he'll have something to focus his energy on other than your furnishings.

Dogs are instinctively flight animals. They'll want to run and hide from the loud noises of ongoing fireworks. As much as you would like to include your dog in the holiday festivities, sometimes it's just best to leave your dog at home where he will be safe. By using these tips for this Fourth of July, you'll prevent your dog from becoming another statistic for dogs that are lost during this holiday. While your dog is hanging out in his safe place, he'll need a comfortable place to rest his head. Don't forget to order your pooch a premium raised dog bed or a waterproof crate pad from PetCot!

Tips to Keep Your Canine Fit and Healthy!

Did you know that roughly 53 percent of pet dogs in the U.S. are overweight? Excess weight can lead to a number of health problems in your dog, and even cut their lifespan short. Sad, but true. Physical fitness and maintaining a healthy body weight is just as important for dogs as it is for humans. Since April is Canine Fitness Month, the PetCot Company is sharing some ways to help keep your dog fit and healthy!

Provide a Healthy Balanced Diet

Every dog, just like every human, is different and requires special care and attention to their diet. To determine what type of diet your dog should be on, have a discussion with your veterinarian. They can tell you how much food you should be feeding your dog during mealtimes and recommend what types of foods to feed for your dog's optimal health. Do not free feed! While this may seem like the easiest way to feed your pooch, it can cause weight gain, and makes it harder to keep track of your dog's consumption. Instead, feed your dog 2-3 times per day at the same time each day in measured amounts.

Exercise Your Pooch Regularly

It's easy for an inside dog to get comfortable with laying around all day and become chubby, just as it is for humans. Your dog should be getting at least 30 minutes of exercise a day, but one to two hours a day is a good average. Not every dog requires vigorous exercise, so take into consideration your dog's age, breed, and overall health when coming up with an exercise routine for your pup. Even if it's just taking your dog for a walk every day, make sure to get out and get your dog the exercise they need to stay healthy.

Ensure Your Pup is Getting Enough Rest

Just like we do, dogs require a good night's sleep for a healthy lifestyle. Studies have shown that sleep deprivation in dogs can lead to the buildup of stress hormones that can cause aggression and other misbehavior. During deep sleep, a hormone called melatonin is released, which helps to protect cells and improve the immune system. So if your dog isn't getting enough sleep, it can be detrimental to his or her overall well-being. To give your dog the best chance for a great night's sleep, get them a premier raised dog bed to ensure that they sleep comfortably and wake up rested.

While the month of April is almost over, and Canine Fitness Month is coming to a close, the PetCot Company wants to stress the importance of using these tips everyday to enhance your pet's quality of life. As stated previously, a healthy amount of sleep is a crucial part of your dog's health. So make sure your pet is comfortable while sleeping by getting them a premium raised dog bed. Petcot raised dog beds come in three sizes so they work for dogs of all breeds and sizes. We even offer a raised pet bed for dogs with incontinence. Replacement parts, fleece covers, and orthopedic inserts are available as well. Visit our website today to order your PetCot raised dog bed today - and enjoy the many years to come with your healthy happy pooch!

Training Your Pet with Positive Reinforcement

There are a few things every pet needs to learn, and some pets have more training required than others. No matter what standards you have for your furry friend, it’s important to make sure that you are training them appropriately. Just as you are more apt to cooperate when you are given positive reinforcement, the same goes for your pet as well. Positive reinforcement can help to encourage good behavior and maybe even limit bad behavior. Here are a few popular training tips for your pet utilizing positive reinforcement.

Verbal Affirmation

Affirming your pet verbally is a key technique in training. While you want to enforce the affirmation with treats, there’s nothing that can completely replace your pride in their behavior. Try to stick with the same verbal praise like “yes!” or “good dog!” Keep in mind that your tone of voice can also make an impact on your commands and your affirmation.

Reward

Rewards are a great way to build positive reinforcement in your pet. Keep in mind, though, that you should only offer rewards for behaviors you want to encourage. Food treats are an easy way to encourage good behavior. Contrary to the typical pet treats, though, they only need to be pea sized. Food treats need to be very small so that long training sessions don’t interrupt their regular feeding routine. If your dog isn’t motivated by food, you can keep a favorite toy on-hand for a short playtime.

How to Treat Bad Behavior

In the training process, it’s important to not punish bad behavior - this is not positive reinforcement. You can ignore bad behavior, or redirect it to an alternate good behavior that you can then reward. In time, your pet will learn to perform the alternate behavior first and the ignored behavior will go extinct. It’s important to not expect too much too soon out of your pet. They will learn, but it could take plenty of practice or “shaping.” Shaping is when you reward small actions that will begin to lead to the desired actions.

Long Term Training

As your pet begins to learn the desired behavior, you can switch to intermittent reinforcement. One way to incorporate intermittent reinforcement is to slowly decrease the number of times your pet is rewarded with a food treat. The first week you may reward them every single time they are successful, whereas the next week, you only reward them ever other time or so. Finally, the third wee, you only reward them a few times to keep up the good behavior. Always use verbal praise when your dog does what is right, even if you don’t use physical treats. You can also use a variable schedule so they won’t get used to a pattern. Eventually, you can phase out food greats and use lots of era-life rewards like petting and play.

Training with the PetCot Bed

You may not have thought of your raised pet bed as a tool for training, but it can be! Many dog trainers, veterinarians, and kennels use the PetCot to aid and reward their trainees. Some use it for the “place” command, to give pet’s a place to go and stay until you release them. Others use it as a great place for the pup to relax. No matter what your method for using the PetCot bed, it’s a premium pet bed that we are sure you will love. Visit our website to learn more about our colors and sizes that are available.

Healthy Practices For Your Pet

While you may be making resolutions for yourself in the new year in regards to health, maybe you should do the same for your pet as well! From food needs to exercise - there are many ways to care for your pet. At the PetCot Company, we know how important your pet is, and keeping them healthy is just one important part of caring for your pet. Here are a few tips to keep in mind for the coming year!

Caloric Needs

While your pet does need food, there is a fine line between having too much and not enough. If you don't give them enough food, it can affect their growth, their ability to stay warm in cold months, and even their energy levels. While overfeeding them can cause them to become obese, which has it's own set of issues. Here is a good guideline to make sure you're feeding your pet the correct amount of food for their weight.

Cats
If your furry feline is around 10 lbs. you want to make sure they are consuming between 180 and 200 calories.

Dogs
You can figure out how much to feed your pet with this formula: 30 x (your pet's weight in kilograms) + 70.

5 lbs.
They need to consume 138 calories in a day.

10 lbs.
Between 200 and 275 calories, a day is a perfect amount.

20 lbs.
This size dog needs 325 and 400 calories a day.

30 lbs.
478 calories is a perfect amount for your pup.

50 lbs.
Limit this size to 700 through 900 calories.

Daily Exercise For Your Pet

While we can offer some suggestions and recommendations for your pet in regards to exercise, it's always best to check with your pet's vet before starting anything new or rigorous.

For long-legged short-nosed dogs like Boxers, Chow Chows, and Mastiffs, brisk walks for about 20-30 minutes are a great way to get some exercise. You'll want to avoid overheating them or over-exerting them, though.

Do you have a large breed dog like a Great Dane, Bernese Mountain Dog or Greyhound? A short 30 minutes walk are a great way to keep them active. Remember that hikes and lengthy runs can be hard on their joints.

Short-legged, short-nosed breeds like Pugs, Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, or Shih Tzus love obstacle courses and walks. You can create a hallway course with cardboard boxes and rolled up towels and let them run around for 20-30 minutes.

If your pup is a short-legged dog with a standard snout, like a Chihuahua or Yorkshire Terrier, slow jog that appeals to their love of sniffing is perfect. Hiding treats and letting them find them is a great way to stretch their muscles.

Long-backed and short-legged dogs with a long snout like Basset Hounds and Dachshunds like brisk walks. Avoid leaping and trying playing fetch for 20-30 minutes instead.

Does your furry friend have long legs and a standard snout? Pointers, Rhodesian, and Ridgebacks love to run. After a year they can run as many as 3 miles at a time!

If you have a water dog, like a Labrador, Golden Retriever, Springer Spaniel, or Poodle they love to swim. 20-30 minutes in a clean body of water that they can get in and out of easily is a great form of exercise.

Giving Your Pet the Best

Just as you care about the food they eat and the way they exercise, we're sure that you care about your pets sleep as well. At PetCot, we've done research to create the best raised pet bed, and now it can easily be yours. Not only is it a great place for your pet to rest and relax, but it's also easy for you to clean, and even a safe place for them to relax by being easy on their joints. Are Your Prepared for a Pet Emergency?

While you don't want to think about emergencies happening to you or your family, at some point you will probably face something that could qualify. In those instances, you would much rather be prepared than wish you had taken some important steps ahead of time. At the PetCot Company, we know how important your furry friend is, and how they can often become neglected in an emergency due to lack of preparation, or even lack of ability to do anything about it. Here are a few things you can do now to make sure you are prepared in the case of an emergency.

Secure Your Pet's Safety

1. Use a microchip or collar with identification so that if you pet ever escapes you can be reached. Also, make sure the information stays up-to-date if you change your phone number.

2. You can put a pet rescue decal on the door or window of your home so that first responders know a pet could be inside.

3. Does your pet have certain places that they hid when they're scared? Make sure you know where they are so you can evacuate faster if something were to happen.

4. Think of a pet-friendly place that you can go in the event you should have to leave your home.

5. Keep an up-to-date image of your pet on your phone. If you ever get separated, you can use that to help find them faster.

Pet Emergency Kit

Because life with a pet will keep you on your toes, and you can never be sure what it going to surprise you, keeping a pet emergency kit can save you some headaches.

Basic first aid supplies

  • A 3 day supply of bottled water and food in a waterproof container
  • Safety harness and leash
  • Waste cleanup supplies
  • Medications and a copy of the pet's medical records
  • List of veterinarians and local pet care organizations
  • List of the pet's feeding routine and any behavioral issues
  • Comfort items, like blankets, or toys. Anything that keeps them comfortable.

What Should I Put In a Pet First Aid Kit?

  • Book on pet first aid. While you can google most questions, if something should happen, like the power was out, you'd probably rather conserve your phone battery for something different.
  • Blanket
  • Chemical cold pack
  • Gauze
  • Adhesive tape
  • Antibiotic cream
  • Cotton swabs
  • Self-cohesive flexible bandages (this stick to themselves and not to your pet's fur.)
  • Disposable gloves
  • Tweezers
  • Blunt tip scissors
  • Sterile saline solution
  • Hydrogen Peroxide (this can be used to make your pet throw up, but only after speaking with a professional)
  • Syringe or plastic eye dropper for liquid medications
  • Pet thermometer

Now that you have your emergency kit supplied and organized, you can relax knowing that minor emergencies can be handled.

Caring For Your Pet Through Life

If you don't have an emergency kit put together for your pet, we hope that this list will inspire you. You can't know everything that can happen, but you can certainly try to be prepared for it. At the PetCot Company, we know how important your pet's comfort and safety are - which is part of why we created the PetCot bed. Our raised pet bed is ideal for any pet of any age. The Care and Keeping of Your PetCot

Have you ever purchased a pillow bed for your pet, only to realize a few weeks down the road that you can hardly bare to touch it? You’re not alone if you feel like your dogs bed gets absolutely filthy, but now the question is, how are you going to clean it? Imagine being able to just spray it with a mild cleaner and wipe it off! That’s exactly what you can do with a PetCot raised pet bed - it’s simply that easy.

The PetCot Company wanted to make a bed that was not only pet friendly but owner friendly as well. This is why our beds are extremely comfortable, but sleek in design and VERY easy to clean. Here are a few ways you can care for your PetCot bed appropriately, and how we continue to help you long after you’ve bought your bed.

Caring & Cleaning

No more washer or dryers to clean dog beds! Woven, vinyl-coated polyester fabric is breathable, will not puddle water and dries quickly and odor-free. It's durable and breathable, and provides dogs with a healthy, cool environment.

If you only need to achieve a quick clean, you can turn the bed on it's side to dump any hair or dirt off. The woven vinyl also gives you the ability to easily sweep it off. If you're looking for a deeper clean, you can hose it off and use a mild cleaner or disinfectant to remove germs and bacteria.

The best part is, the PetCot won't need cleaned as much as an ordinary pet bed anyway! The sleek design means that you aren't providing a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. You can go longer in between cleanings, and when you do have to clean its VERY easy.

Replacement Parts

While our beds are extremely sturdy and made to last, there are occasionally a few times where a pet owner may find that something on their pet bed has broken. Thankfully, we sell all of the replacement parts on our website so you can have your bed back up and running in no time - or should we say "laying down and sleeping"? ;)

The Best Elevated Dog Bed

At the PetCot Company, we take pride in the products that we provide for your family - specifically your furry family. Our pet beds are comfortable, sturdy, easy to clean, and the favorite pet bed in many homes. If you are ready to take the next step to having the best pet bed, visit our website to learn more. Also, don't forget that for Small Business Saturday (November 26th) you can get 10% off of the purchase of your pet bed. Don't delay, this offer is ONLY good on November 26th!
